Trying to remove the rear deck to add new speakers. Rear seat removed easily, rear deck being tricky. Removed the side panels and the child safety seat hold down brackets and still cant lift deck more than about 2 inches. Any hints?

Thanks in advance!

A trick I use on several makes and models is remove the rear deck speakers from underneath, usually you can work the screws out that hold the speaker in(I have used drills, but I find vice grips work best), and you can usually work the speaker out through the opening, it takes a little work, but usually the factory speakers will fit out the opening. Then you can use lock washers and zip screws to secure them in from the bottom. I have done this on several makes and models where the rear deck is a hassle to get out; such as Corsicas, Iluminas, etc... Get into the trunk and see how the speakers are mounted, this will give you some ideas for removing them from the bottom, or you may see something holding down the deck you did not notice.
It would be nice if all vehicles were easy to take apart, and just as easy to put together, unfortunately in the car audio world, it seems that most auto manufacturers are against us putting aftermarket equipment in.

Ditto that! Car makers are doing all they can to put the "shade tree" mechanics out of biz. There's big money to be made by Dealerships doing repair work on their brands. At $60-80.00/hr., labor rates at the dealership, it's hard to swallow that pill. Fortunately, car audio installers are more creative and can do more at less costs.

Turns out there were a set of screws that actually held the rear deck down that had originally appeared to be holding only the speakers in place. These screws were under the original speaker covers, so inaccessible from the top side. Once removed the rear deck came out with relative ease. I'm actually pleased with how Mitsubishi put the interior of this car together, once you know the tricks they use, things come apart and go together quite easily.

Thanks for the ideas and help folks, much appreciated.

after you do this for a while you become really good and knowing how they like to hide stuff, and where to look.
