Meat Loaf, Back In To Hell III

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah.

I know some of you tree-huggin hippie freaks who were turned on by the thought of Pink Salmon Floyd going back onto tour would read this one about Meat Loaf! GRIN

However, Meat Loaf (that's me) back into hell (Lost Wages, NV) has to do with my 3rd and final trip to Vegas before I either become a lifer in the mortgage industry, or a Poker Pro. I'm rooting for poker, because frankly, I'm tired of the rat race of sales.

Since 1996, my first full time commission gig, I've had numerous cars, ups and downs, had companies try to screw me out of money, and of course a modest level of recent success. At this point in my career, I'm tired of using my powers of persuasion to grind out a living.

Therefore, after this trip, I'm either giving up poker for a year, or giving up working for a year.

Talk about a big bet?

Kinda know where you're coming from. After 20+ years in Sales... grinding it out, making a decent living and then have the plug/rug pulled out from under, I took a sabbatical.

After a few summer months of loafing about, started looking for a new rat race to play in. The economy had taken a nose dive and the plane was about 20 feet deep into terra firma. After 3 solid months of No, No, NO... noon jobs appeared that paid anywhere close to where I was prior. Hense, I started my own biz!

Although this gig is now in it's 5th year, I have enjoyed it, made some change and had many sore days regrouping from a heavy physical demand type work. Now, am looking again. (Detroit is a dying market, Auto worker layoff galore and suppliers are following suit) So, am rolling the dice again.

Interview pending tomorrow for a position at one of our local Cadillac, Jag, Hummer, Rolls Royce Dealerships. Pretty big outfit with several locations in several ritzy cities in the US. What the hey, start small and work up I guess.

FYI: That one job I was looking into on a charter boat fishing gig did not pan out this season. The boats arn't booking many trips til Fall salmon runs. There goes my dream job.... deck hand, 2nd mate and baiting specialist etc. Guess I won't get my MBS (Master Bating Specialist) this year afterall. Rats!

Think I'll move to Australia...

I think we always know you were a master Baiter....just that we didn't know there was a degree for it.

Just exactly how do you get a PhD in that field????

At any rate, I've had a modest level of success leading every company that I've worked for....but as my old friend Thornton Melon once said, "..It's lonely at the top...when there's noone on the bottom.."

I hear you about the economy. The unemployment rate is around 6% according to the government. However, I think we both know that double that have run out of benefits or taking a job at Mickey D's to pay the bills, so they don't count anymore. The true spending power unemployment rate is easily double digits here...and I see it every day in credit applications.

People that were laid off, had a 6 month gap in employment...took a $20,000 pay cut just to have a job. The number of people that I've financed in that circumstance is excessive. Frankly, it's depressing to see a couple with a few kids loose a job, file BK, go through a repo, have a foreclosure...then 1 year later, they have a good paying job again, but are leveraged to their eyeballs.

I guess the reason I'm moving to the SW is more of a matter of the home values...and not employment. At this stage in my career, I could work anywhere. If I were looking for employment in a non-sales environment, I'd say Phoenix and the desert SW are the places to go. Heck, even Lost Wages is still climbing.

Detroit and other single industry areas are suffering and will continue to do so until they attract a diversity of employers. It would be ironic, but if Toyota and Honda ended up buying all the manufacturing plants of GUM, FURD, and Christler, and then staffing them with Rice!!!! Wouldn't that be ironic???

At any rate, if you move to Australia, you'll have to pick up a wanker accent, and get rid of your Ted Nugent one, dare Peppy!

B,

You are so right... Detroit is such a one note Johnny and has been for a long time. Average UE figures posted by the State are averaging 7.5%. Some areas are closer to 20% UE, but on a real time basis, the whole state of MI is well above 18% EU or under employed.

In short, me thinks a move outta the "RUST BELT" is coming in the next year or so. Yes, there are many things to enjoy in MI. But earning a livable wage is getting harder by the month. The Winters' are not like Minnihaha, but bad enough to say "nicks" to more of the same. The ol bones don't like cold and damp weather... which is generally 7.5 months of the year. (Oct-May) Love it here from Sept-early Nov... then cold, wet and yuck til mid-May.

Funny thing this year. A mild Winter, cool & wet Spring and now... a very balmy early summer. It's pretty dry now in many parts of the state and upper 80's-low 90's have been the norm the past 3 weeks. A bit sticky too. Very strange weather pattern this year so far.

PS Phoenix ya say? Hummmm, I like AZ. Desert heat sure beats high humidity and low 90's. Feels more like Tennessee weather here now.

Tennessee weather?

Is that where it's so hot and humid you'll kiss your sister because you're too lazy to go outside?

STEEEEEEEERIKE!!!

Yep, that's about the size of it... the sister kissing is more predominent in KY and AK.

Made a few trips to TN a few years ago with a g/f. The first trip was in July. At 7:00 AM, it was in the 80's and you could just see the dew burning off the fields in the form of steam. One cup of COFFEE and a smoke or 2, was sweating like horse after a 2 mile dead run. Installed 2 ceiling fans out on the back porch though. Much better air flow then.

Went again in Sept a few years later. Much better! Temps were in mid 80's by mid-day and cooler at night. Did get a nice "smooch" or two from g/f's Auntie and cousins then. Those 2 fans I installed 2 years back, they drooped like noodles, hot out of water. That's what I call sticky hot weather.

AZ has a vast job market, Phoenix is one of the biggest comsumer testing areas in the US, the "Snowbirds" make it an interesting place during the winter months(nothing like getting stuck behind one when you are late for an appointment). I lived in Tempe for a year, the whole area is thriving and I had wished I never left. Michigan will always be my home......but one has to pay the bills and the job market here is making it harder and harder to do so. The big 3 auto makers, not upgrade, are folding like lawn chairs and the most jobs under pay b/c they know if you don't want the job for that salary, some-one else will.
I have been looking into moving back to AZ for the last 6 months or so....it may happen here soon, I have also looked into TN and KY also, as well as Florida. AZ seems to be a solid package all around....

Florida is great in the late Fall - early Spring. After that, some areas get plenty hot and sticky from late April - October. I went for the winter down to Springhill. (45 mi north of Tampa) From November til early April, twas bee-u-ti-ful.

Same deal there. Tons of Snowbirds and lots of retirees too. They roll up the sidewalks at dusk. BTW, hope you are very healthy too. To see a Doctor there, takes an act of Congress and a letter from GW Bush. (or maybe Jeb Bush might do) There are so many Docs down there, but way more patience then they can keep up with. The old folks go to the Doctor so often, it's like a reunion when they walk in the waiting room.

"Well hello Erma, haven't seen you in a few days. How are you doing? Not so hot Helen, I got hemmroids again, a case of the shingles and maybe a dose of pnemonia too."

Yep, that's what ya hear at the Doctor's office in FL alright.
