Hey everyone, this is my first post here...I'm getting a new system installed on the car and need your opinions on the setup that I have. Here's what I currently have in my car now: Eclipse 8053 Head Unit Zapco Studio 500 Amp rated at 1,000W RMS@ 2ohms Morel Hybrid Ovation 5.25" in a Q-form kick panel enclosure. Rockford 501X amp running the Morels up front. Optima Yellow Top Battery I still haven't picked out some speakers yet. Looking into this but wanted to get some opinions first. So far the shop let me test out 2 12" JL W1, 13" W7 and 1 12" W1...The 2 12" W1 knocked just as hard as as the W7 and I liked them better than the W7...I want to step up to the W3, maybe 4 10" W3 running off the Zapco amp...Please give some input if you have experience with the W3...By the way, that Zapco amp is a beast...Thanks Replies (6) illmatic1981 on 06/20/2005 14:45:59 Also if you guys have any suggestions as to what other setups that you think will sound great with that amp would also appreciate. I'm looking for a combination of SQ and SPL. lessismorespl on 06/20/2005 16:42:59 I have 2 JL W3V2 4ohm DVC's in my car right now running off a Diamond 600.1, they are great SQ subs once they are broke in, and they hit hard. That Zapco amp is a beast, and IMO would probably over power the the W3's. I would look into some more powerful subs, here are a few suggestions that match up good w/ that amp: JL Audio W6 10's or 12's http://www.jlaudio.com MTX Audio 8500's 10's or 12's http://www.mtxaudio.com/caraudio/products/subwoofers/thunder8500.cfm Resonant Engineering SE's 10's or 12's http://www.reaudio.com/html/ Digital Designs DD2000a 10's or 12's http://www.ddaudio.com/dd/caraudio/woofers.asp?series=2000a CDT Audio HD-1020 or HD-1220 http://www.cdtaudio.com/longexcursionsubs.htm Diamond Audio D612D2/D612D4 http://www.diamondaudio.com/products/index.cfm?page=productSearch&Line=&Type=28&model=Model+Number+here...&searchSubmit=SEARCH Any of these would make a good match for that Zapco amp. less illmatic1981 on 06/21/2005 11:00:08 Less, Thanks for the suggestions. I considered the 2 12 W6's but I am getting a great deal on 4 10W3's that's hard to pass up now...The shop said that it would be perfect for this amp because the 10W3's can handle 250 watts RMS each and there's 1,000 going into 4 speakers. To me that logically makes sense, but correct me if I'm wrong. I haven't had this done yet, supposed to bring the car in tomorrow so that they can build a ported box that will fit into the little trunk space I have left. Will keep you posted once it's all done. Thanks lessismorespl on 06/21/2005 12:31:43 Make sure you get the 4ohm DVC models, JL makes 2ohm, 4ohm, and 6ohm DVC in the W3V2 series. 4ohm DVC will give you the 2ohm impedance your amp is rated at. If space is a problem, I would still consider going 2 12's rather than 4 10's, you would get slightly more SPL, and you would get great sound quality, especially w/ the W6's. In many cases more subs does not mean more SPL due to lack of air space and cancellation. less illmatic1981 on 06/21/2005 14:06:59 Well trunk space is not an issue at all now for me, it will be though once 4 10"s are in...I really don't care how many subs I have either 4 10W3v2 or 2 12W6v2...I just want loud and thundering bass that'll rattle the mirrors yet still maintain excellent sound quality...I'm willing to sacrifice all of my trunk space if necessary to achieve this...Let me know what you think would sound better and louder...Thanks a million swez on 06/21/2005 14:17:32 Ditto... 4 sub in a confined space (like a vehicle) have tendencies to cancel some parts of the bass spectrum out. A pair of strong 12's ("like the W6v2 series") would be a good option. I say "like" as the 6v2's only come in 4+4 DVC's. The net load is 1 or 4 ohms here. Not a perfect match for your Zapco amp. What is needed here, would be a pair of 2+2 DVC's that handle ~500 Wrms/sub. Alpine Type R's meet that criteria with the SWR-1222D's. http://www.alpine-usa.com/ Adire Brahma's are 2+2 DVC's as well. A bit more expensive than Alpine, but a fine SQL sub too. http://www.speedsound.com/caraudio.asp?pg=products&specific=jmroqokrq http://www.adireaudio.com/Files/BrahmaPowerHandling.pdf http://www.adireaudio.com/Mobile/BrahmaSeries.htm Digital Designs, Resonant Engineering and others mentioned are all up to par as well. The key elements here are to balance size of the recommended enclosure, proper ohmic load (2+2 DVC's if 2 subs are used) and enough power handling to meet the amps' output capabilities.
