I'm looking into purchasing a system and wanted a little advice from those who have been around the block a few times. I'm right now deciding between doing a pretty basic install and going crazy with it and taking out the back seat and doing a whole custom look back there. If I did that I'd be looking at probably going with 3 or 4 12" JL W6v2's. First off, I want it LOUD but any idea on if that would just make incredibly too loud to the point of annoyance? I was going to go with either 3 or 4 since if I took out the back seat it just wouldn't look full enough with say, 2. Second, if I DON'T do the whole custom back seat thing, I'm trying to decide on a good sub. JL's are so expensive, I was wondering what's out there that will still hit the bass but not hit my checkbook as much. I was thinking maybe Alpine Type R's?!?! Ideas? Finally, any ideas on good choices for amps and speakers? Amps if I did the custom I was thinking of going with JL's just to keep the look pretty uniform with all JL, but if I didn't I'm open to suggestions on those. On the speakers I was thinking either Boston Pro Series or Focal Polyglass/Poly-Kevlar Series. Any ideas on which would be better? Also, with all my bass I'd be running would there be a distinct benefit of choosing 3-way component speakers or would it not be a big difference from getting the 2-way components (I'm speaking of just the front speakers of course, which will be 6.5"; rear I'll probably just stick with 5 1/4" coaxials). Thanks for all your help guys!!! -Mike- Replies (4) dflock on 07/16/2003 14:23:35 Mike, Personally I wouldn't want to take the rear seat out of my car. The more ladies you can get in your car the better, but its up too you. I've used JL w0''s, I had two 12" in a box in my trunk and it sounded great. The w6s will be very very loud, and you may need an alternator upgrade if you were to run 4 of them. Personally I would look into a custom box in your trunk with 3 JLs, running at 4 ohm each wired parallel so that you get a 1.33 ohm load. But its all up to you. As for Subwoofers, I have never heard the Alpine Type Rs. I've used Inifinity Kappa Perfect, @ $150 a piece from eBay and they are great. Also look into Adire Shiva's, as they are under $150 a piece and are supposed to be excellent subs. Other companies you might look into are Resonant Engineering, Onyx, and Image Dynamics. These are all respectable companies with fair priced products. compvr15s on 07/16/2003 15:53:18 i have my system where my back seat used to be, i like it but there is no room for people to sit only bad thing, i had 2 12in kicker L7 solo barics in there and it was unbelievable lould, now i have 2 15 inch comp vrs. alot louder and a great deal too. solos each costed me 399, comp vrs only costed 199 and they hit harder. i dont know what everybody thinks of kicker but i love thier products. you may want to look into 12in comp vrs. like 129 for the price i think. get 3 or 4 of them and get wire them down to 1 ohm and you will be in business lol. good luck. still waitin to do the custom work in the back seat, but my car aint runing so no use in doing it right now. Swez on 07/16/2003 22:08:21 Let's look a bit at your power needs... how much ALT and battery power do you have now? If you have <100A worth of ALT power, a large capacity battery (<800 CA rating +) running a huge sub amp means major electrical upgrades. Very expensive upgrade potential here. Are you able to manage that kind of power for the sub amp? If no, drop back and punt. If yes, lets look at how much power you can allocate to a sub amp, then work from that to determine what size system you can manage with what you have now. Finally, do you want a huge bass system only or do you plan to upgrade your mid/highs with an amp as well? It seems like you are looking for a bit of both here. Again, power management issues come to the forefront again. Say more... Swez mJonesie on 07/17/2003 04:18:59 Well a couple of the big reasons I was thinking of taking out the back seat to do the custom install thing is 1)it'd look REAL sweet lighting it up with neon lights and maybe the Dodge Ram symbol etched on some plexiglass and 2)i've been told I can not fit 2 12" JL w6v2's under my back seat so I'd have to remove the back seat ANYWAY so why not make it look nice? As far as seating is concerned, I RARELY have more then one passenger in my vehicle, and being it is a pickup truck I've always got the bed if push comes to shove. As far as amps go if I went with 3 JL's I'm thinking of running a 1000 watt mono channel to give them each about 333 watts/piece(they are rated at 400 watts RMS) or if I ran 4 JL's then running 2 1000 watt mono channels to give them 500 watts/piece. With my speakers, depending on which brand I go with which will determine power handling, I'm looking at either the JL 450 watt 4 channel(125 w/piece to the front channels, 75 w/piece to the back) or the 300 watt 4 channel(75 watt/channel). As far as alt and battery power in truth I have no idea what I'm running. Would a simple look under the hoop give me the answer to that? One main thing I would like to get out of my system is have MONSTROUS bass while still maintaining GREAT mids and highs (difficult, i know). That is why I'm looking at purchasing a top-of-the-line speaker set-up in order to match my top-of-the-line bass set-up. That's why I'm wondering if a 3-way component system will be a good benefit or not over the 2-ways. Basically, I'd actually like to still hear the song, not just the lowest two octaves of the song.
