sub box design

I been wracking my brain to design a ported sub enclosure for 2 10" drivers to go into the trunk of my wife's dodge avenger, and also allow for access to the spare tire. I have a design, but wanted tome expert feedback about it's design, I could email what I have made.

41" long, 16" deep, 13" tall
center baffle through the middle, both drivers to be mounted on the top. unsure what to do with the ports, was thinking 3" ( don;t know length, and was goin to poition them at the back pointing to the rear seat ( there is 10" between back of enclosure to the rear of the back seat)

any feedback or advice appreciated

im not an expert by any means, but if it was my i would put the subs and the ports on the same side, both facing the same way, so front and rear waves go the same way, no canelation will occur this way and by puting both on the same side and facing towards the rear license plate you will probably get the most out of your box... i have subs facing up in my ole ladys car and its not that desirable.... just my two cents, good luck

was thinking if pointing up and the rear 6X9's not installed on the back ledge would allow for the sound to carry better into the cab. I thought that pointing the drivers towards the rear plate that the enclosure itself would get in the way of the sound.. trunk space is only 41" wide X 17" high.

before i begin i would like to point out that i am a beginner as well but i've been here long enough to pick up a few things. i really don't think that pointing your subs towards the 6x9 holes will make them any louder actually i would think that you'd be constricting they're airspace and they wouldn't be able to move as freely therefore moving less air and limiting the amount of bass that can be produced. there have been a few posts on here that mounting them towards the rear of the vehicle actually make it louder than pointed forward. i would place the ports on the same side as the subs as well, though i don't know a whole lot about cancellation i've learned to trust the golds, they've all been doing this stuff long enough to know what they're talking about.

there is an online tuning frequency converter that will be able to tell you exactly how long your ports should be depending on the size of your box, displacement of sub, and desired tuning frequency. i'm sorry to say that i didn't hold onto this website after i used it to build my boz though i got it from someone on this site and i'm sure that one of them will have it kicking around and be able to post it on here to help you better.

like i said i'm still a beginner and i apologize if my info wasn't correct if it wasn't i'm sure one of the golds will be sure to correct me.

I am also thinkink this enclosure will be kinda large, i might do well with a single 12 or 15" probably take up less space and still get some serious output, was thinking of using Alpijne MRD501, think it puts out 600 RMS. I could always buy a box, but I don't beleive they are designed properly., the box i was designing is actually too big for the trunk ( will never get the spare tire out if need be)

i cant remember the website off the top of my head but i have a 15 inch adire audio tempest and im very pleased w/ it its loud and has pretty good SQ for a ported box...

these subs sell brand new on this website ima go look for for 150 and they are 750wrms subs 16mm of excursion on this bad boy which moves SERIOUS air for a sub for 150 bux

okay found 1 co. in canada on the west coast,, for the price you talking I assume you using the tempest ? because the brauma 15MKII is $540.00.

yes i am using the tempest its a bargain for the price

if you want a 12 inch i heard the shivas from adire audio are basically like 12 inch tempests

going to bed now, I personally have been burned before on "awsome inexpensive" stuff, to find it was made in china and had a lifespan of a fruit fly. Being that the only place that sells them in canada is vancouver and I have no way of checking this bad boy out in person, i will probably pass. Also I am thinking that a ported box for a 15" is probably going to be about the same size as the one i made up for the 2 10's i might look at 12's, I might pay more for an Alpine Type R, but i know what they can do.

A pair of Alpine Type R's would be a fine choice with the MRD-501 amp. Even a 300 watt version will do a very good job and needs less current too.

As for firing the subs upward, under the parcel shelf, have found this too restricting on good deep bass reprodution. Firing to the rear of the car is often the best way to go. If you leave the 6x9 hole open, plenty of bass will come into the cabin this way.

Why port? Sealed boxes can do a fine job in a smaller footprint and deliver tight, quick bass response. The Alpine 10's are great in a larger sedan, using 0.85 ft^3/sub. (inner airspace)

About Adire Shiva's, (12" only, 8+8 DVC's) can be used as well. However, they sell for $125.00 each (USD). They will play lower than Alpine 10's, but require a 1.0-1.25 ft^3 enclosure per sub. Great subs too BTW.

FYI: Did make a custom sealed box for a client a while back with a pair of Shiva's in customer specified 1.50 ft^3 chambers. He had a low budget Sony Class D amp that faithfully produced 600 Wrms @ 2 ohms. It played deep bass very well, but the chambers were so large, this box was really not what I consider a high SQL fit. (too boomy) But for Rap, Hip Hop and Country, he loved em. Yes, they were plenty loud... just not the tight bass hits one might prefer for Rock & Jazz.
