its been awhile.....feels good to be back, ive been so busy lately... but ne way i am very curious to build stuff... it mite sound stupid, but i would like to build my own subwoofer for the fun of it (no matter about cost)... its summer time and that means i have a lot of extra time on my hands during the day.... ive been doing alot of research on building one and it seems like some other ppl have also done it... anybody know nesites that i oculd go to, to get names of companies that make parts for subwoofers..... and maybe some tutorials or instruciotns on puting it together i kno this isnt practical or nething, and im sure there is better ways to spend my money...but its to keep me busy and learn more about all this stuff, ive already made up my mind on this so dont say like... with the money ur gunna put in it u could buy GREAT subs........keep in mind, im not born with all this knowledge like u guys are, hahaha, so this is a LEARNING EXPERIENCE palmQ Replies (4) ttocs on 06/12/2005 03:34:38 I have known people that have done it, but it has been a while and I have lost touch with them. I wouldn't call you stupid fer wanting to do it, I would call myself lazy for not wanting to... lessismorespl on 06/12/2005 06:52:26 I would not call you stupid either. It has been probably 6 years since I built a speaker. I used an old basket and magnet from a blown Memphis 15" LVS. I had purchased some of the parts from: http://www.partsexpress.com and http://www.partsconnexion.com. Here is another site I think you may find useful: http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/speaker.htm Go to the bottom of the page and you will see several catagories on speakers and how they work, how they produce sound etc....I think this would be very useful in building your own speaker. less swez on 06/12/2005 10:00:26 Great summer project plans here. May want to call around (google search, etc.) for speaker rebuilders and see where they get their parts from. Can also call a few of the smaller sub makers and ask if you can buy one in a DIY kit. "Hey, I'm doing a science project and want to assemble a working sub from kitted parts. Can I purchase needed parts from your company" ? It would also be a bit easier to rebuild a blown sub. Can get parts from a rebuilder or direct from a Mfg., too. FYI: If memory serves me right, new speakers are assembled with the magnets that have yet to be magnitized. After a certain phase of assembly is done, then the magnets are energized and ready to do their work. Need very specialized equipment to energize a blank magnet. Swez lessismorespl on 06/12/2005 10:13:23 Yes, this is true, manufacturers use blank magnets that need to be magnitized. These are very specialized machines. Just a quick note....I was talking to the rep from Mitek that other day at the shop and we were talking about the Jackhammer sub MTX is producing, there are only 2 working in the world right now and it is about a 4 month wait if you special order one. He was telling me when they were magnitizing the magnet that the mahcine actually levitated off the floor so they had to build better brackets to hold the machine down.
