whenever i turn my CD player on my sub (15 inch adire audio tempest in a ported box) makes a noise and reaches full excursion (around 16 mm i believe it is)

i was wondering what was causing this...

my system is this
Pioneer DEH P6500
Audiobahn AEQ6 Equalizer
JBL B600.1
Adire Audio Tempest 15

please help me figure out how to stop this (im afraid its damaging my sub)

check the grounding of your amp, most of the time that will fix it, i have that same head unit and my two 15s have a turn on thump but not full excursion, im not sure what my problem is, like when i put a cd in and before the music starts the subs are rumbling or if its switching from song to song same problem, it hasnt bothered me enough yet to find out what it is, but id start with grounding, maybe even need a better ground for your headunit, factory wiring tends not to be the greatest... very simy to run a wire off the HU ground to somwhere under the dash, just make sure its a bare metal area, sand away paint or anything else that will obsturct contact, same goes for the amp...

I thought they had fixed the problem of the tinsel lead slap at high excursions?

It could also be a speaker wire hitting the cone?

Have 2 thoughts for you:

1. Do you have an inline Sub Sonic Filter before that amp?

2. What is the gain setting used on your amp now?

Bonus question: Do you know the preamp voltage for that HU?

I'm not real knowledgable w/ that amp, but if it has a bass boost and it is set too high, that can cause this problem.

no i dont know the voltage of the HU - the gain is set at under half probly 1/3 im not using the bass boost and mine also does the thing when u change out the cds....

the amp i believe HAS a ss filter

try disconnecting the rca's at different points in the signal and see if you still get it.

thanks i will try that

Unfortunately, that amp series does not come with an SSF. If using a ported enclosure, highly recommended as this device may indeed filter out that thump as well.

Also, this amp can deliver a tad over 300 Wrms @ 4 ohms. When you finish checking your input wires, try adjusting the input "gain" sensitivity closer to the 4 volt setting and see if that does deminish the thump.

Finally, that Bahn EQ will deliver up to 4 volts to the sub outputs. It's a good product. Just make sure you have a good ground and wire connections in and out of that device.

yeah i got it offa thezeb.com for really cheap... i found it for 109.99 there and found it for 89.99 on sonicelectronix.com and they do a best price program and i told them about SE and they gave it to me for 79.99 which is nice because it came w/ the warranty and all

That is a very good price off the Zeb. Have seen them on e-bay for $60.00 + S/H and often no warranty.

I think what might be happening here, is that the Bahn EQ has more RCA voltage than the HU. This boosts all signals coming out of the Bahn EQ/LD to a point where the sub amp is getting too much low end wattage (sub sonic) and this may be why your sub is doing the over-excursion at turn on.

Try adjusting your your sub amp gain to 4 volts and look for a SSF filter network to block ultra low signal noises. What is your Port tuning Frequency on that sub/enclosure? F-Mods may be all you need here.

35 hz (well somewhere inbetween 25-35 but i believe its 35)

Here's a link to a Harrison Labs F-Mod series SSF filter that filters below 30 Hz:

http://www.thezeb.com/p-Harrison-Labs-FMOD-900059-101684.htm

They come in matched pairs for the price noted. Very simple to install, modular and not very expensive compared to a blow sub.
