Hey this is dustin agin sorry about that last post i looked this time did not see any thing about this i know i shuld already have an alarm system but i don't so this is my ? i have about 350 to spend thats with it installed what is the best one i can get for that price please let me know i plan on geting it done in the morning 5/31/05 hope you pep know i know u will you know every thing thanks agin Dustin Swords Replies (11) uochronos on 05/30/2005 23:21:33 cant really tell yo9u man i dont know what you have avalible to you... goto a good shop not a best buy or circuit city but a smaller car audio shop thats been around for awhile and has a good rep... tell them you have like 300 to spend installed ask what the best you can get for that is and they will set you up. i say give yourself a 50$ leway though because you often have small install fees maybe an extra sensor you want added or a bracket or harnbes etc it may need... most good car audio shops will haves 2 or 3 good brands of car alarms looks for solid features and easy to use not frills or gimicks. thats the best advise i can give lessismorespl on 05/30/2005 23:22:59 I paid $250 installed for my Viper, it included keyless entry and trunk sensor. For $350, you can probably get all those features plus 2-way pager which is nice. I also like the lifetime warranty on Viper alarms. compvr15s on 05/30/2005 23:23:33 there are many good ones to choose from, it just depends on what you need/want. can get just plain alarm, will warn most nearcommers and then the alarm will go off if they do not get away like they are supposed to... there are also alarms with push button start, sounding alarm when vehicle is being triggered.... so many things to choose from. if i was you i would goto your local stereo shop, see what systems they have and find out all the perks and which one would suite you the most.... most places will give discounts on merchendise purchesed through their store.... you may be able to talk the price down abit, just do not be afraid to ask, and if they are too pricey dont give in, be willing to walk, in turn they are thinking by giving you a 10-20% discount this may keep you returning to thier store and advising friends to buy from thier... BestBuy, and CurcitCity are not the best places for installs, many of the installers are younger people, sure they can get the job done, but its it neat and clean, if your paying for something, you want to get the most out if it.... others may advise on brands but thats how i would go about it first.... lol all three of us must have been typing at the same time, when i started there were no replies, lol thats funny, didnt mean to over run anybody, i didnt see any replies when i started. good luck in shopping ttocs on 05/31/2005 02:52:17 not near phoenix are ya? If not I still might be able to point you to a reputable installer. A true security installer will install the alarm while keeping the wiring neat and clean, it is a work of art when done right........ There are alot of options, and your truck should be a fairly neat and clean and easy install. I would go to a shop and ask if you could see pics of thier intalls, or possably check out their wiring on one they are currently working on. Ask how they make their connectoins? Some shops(too many) will use T-taps to kick out an alarm in an hour. This totally bypasses the security that the alarm should inherently possess, as you can simply pull the connection apart with little effert, and it will fail down the road. Soldering is best, crimping is acceptable if done right. lessismorespl on 05/31/2005 10:37:52 This is very true. Back in 1998, I had a Code Alarm installed by Best Buy. It was nothing less than a nightmare. I could open my doors and not trigger the alarm. The wires were so sloppy that everytime I engaged my parking break I was stripping out the trunk sensor wire, the siren was not attached and was actually connected under the hood by 2 rubber bands wrapped around each other and siren was facing less than an inch from the batter so it was muffled everytime it went off. I do my own, but if you do not have experience w/ alarms, have a professional do it. My Viper was $249 installed + tax, I have keyless entry, door and trunk sensors, shock sensors, etc... for $49.99 more I can get the glass sensors which was done down the road. I'm very happy with the Vipers, but I also like the new Bulldogs, the Vipers have the lifetime warranty though. Something a little less exspensive is the Valet alarms, which are amde by DEI(same manufacturer as Viper) and they have a 5 year warranty. I have heard of problems w/ the Code Alarms. Your best bet is to go to a good car audio shop, look over the alarms they offer, ask a few questions, then start to deal. DO NOT TELL THEM YOU WANT TO SPEND $350!!!!!!!! Go in, talk a little, learn some things about what they offer, then leave and go to another shop(I'm fortunate to have to of the most reputable shops 6 blocks apart) to look over their alarms. Once you find what you are looking for at ea shop, then you start talking about price. My alarm was $289.99, + $49.99 for keyless, $49.99 for trunk sensor, I paid less than $260 O.T.D. for all the above installed. So you can deal. Most cannot deal w/ the mian module or brain of the basic alarm, but they can throw in little perks like the trunk sensor and keyless for free. ttocs on 05/31/2005 14:51:47 a bad alarm install is not just a head ache, it can be a fire hazzard and leave you standing next to a car that is alarming and not starting for no reason. Do your research on the local places and do not rush this. shop and campair and you will be able to tell who is who. All you really need to do is make sure that they know you WILL stick your head up in the dash and take a look, and if it is not done right you WILL be back. I did a PR thing for the shop I sideline at when they where short of people. It was an event put on by local PD where they were marking windows with vin #'s and passing out clubs and such. I was there to try and sell alarms. Of course EVERYONE has a factory alarm and thinks that is all they need(since the dealer charged $500-700 fer them). When they had thier car infront of my booth I would simply ask if I could take a look and make sure that their alarm was installed properly. I bet 1 in 5 cars that came by I showed them that I could bypass that factory alarm in seconds by disconnecting the t-tap on the yellow wire that just hung down. I would literally get under their dash and pop up as fast as I could(normally 5-7 seconds) and then tell them to set the alarm off, but they could not. We sold a few alarms that day and probably sent more then a few customers straight back to the dealer to complain......... That was a fun day. i saw it as my way at getting back at the maunufacturers for making it continually more difficult to integrate into. I am a security guy I guess.... gearhead on 05/31/2005 16:23:26 Not to be a SA, but when is the last time you saw anyone DO anything, other than point and laugh, about a car alarm that went off? That being the case, what good are they? BgDustin4 on 06/1/2005 00:17:09 if some one is trying to get your stuff and it goes off most of the time they will run just because but pep do look so its better then non i have no alarm on my truck right now did not come with one at all thanks for all the help i will shop for a viper i gess UKinstaller on 06/1/2005 01:09:50 car alarms will always be good for one thing: starter kill relays. impossible to drive off with car while alarm is engaged. this was their original purpose, not to protect car stereo equipment like so many people believe. if a cd player is snatched, you're out $100 or maybe a few hundred bucks more. if a CAR is snatched, you're out everything inside PLUS the car is going to be stripped. the cost is much higher, and alarms effetively prevent it from happening. we get so many customers who complain because somebody smashed out their windows and snatched a booklet of cd's or something. NO alarm can prevent theft no matter how good it is installed, because it takes at most one minute for a good thief to steal a radio or amp/subs. it is impossible to prevent theft or personal items, but an alarm can definitely prevent someone from taking off with your car, which is the ultimate wammy anyway. some people say that people can disconnect alarms and stuff, but if installed properly, you can't get to them in the first place, and even then, you have to reconnect the starter wire because it is cut in two for the relay to work. no starter wire = no start. overall, alarms are cool. if someone were standing next to two identical cars, one with a flashing LED and one without, the one without the LED would get broken into. it's an intimidation thing. put some scanning LED's in your car and NO ONE will mess with it, those are real mean looking. -UK lessismorespl on 06/1/2005 16:59:32 That is true, if a good alarm is installed properly, it cannot be tampered with. No alarm can stop a smash & grab, but there are some little things you can do to give the theif a hard time when trying to steal your HU or other components. I always make sure my dash kit has screws everywhere, I usually use hex screws b/c most thieve do not have a tool kit w/ them, try to make sure the radio is as secure as possible, I know, it is a pain to get out if you need to work on it, but if you installed it and you have trouble getting it out, how hard do you think it would be for a theif. My old Panasonic MXE had the face smashed b/c the thief could not get it out of the dash, so he smashed the face, after ripping up my dash pretty good, some people were around the corner and heard the alarm go off, when it did not go back off after a couple minutes, they went around to see what was going on and he ran off. The face smashed, but my car and other audio equipment was still intact, so I think an alarm is worth every pennie. And like UK said, if 2 vehicles are next to ea other and one has the LED and the other does'nt, believe me that other car is hit! less ttocs on 06/3/2005 00:49:06 I bet if my alarm went off you would look........... horn honk, interior sirens = 2 regular 6 tone siren outside but the thing that will really make you look is the mechanical siren....... go ahead, try not to look, 3 parking lots over..........
