Ok i am very interested in tackling the task of making my own plexi glass box since i cant find one anywhere cheap enough... i was wondering what i was going to need to do this i kno of course plexi glass 1/2 inch thick? but i no there is a certain glue? and i htink you also use screws to hold it together, and if anyone knows where to get pre-made ports for it and the connections... Thanks Replies (5) palmquist on 05/25/2005 19:46:07 be glad to help... if you need an online warehouse, go to http://www.mcmaster.com/ they have a HUGE selection of everything that is tools/hardware and even a little more- just clik cntrl F to find wut ur looking for since its kinda hard to find nething by scrolling but heres wut youll need glue- 1.IPS Weld-On 3....if you cant find that use 2.Plastic Surgery port- http://www.cleartecpackaging.com/heavy_wall_tubing.asp ....thats the best place i could find for you on that... if i were u i would just buy wut diam. you need and buy it in resonable amount of length so u can cut many ports if needed connection- alot of times when making a box i like to just drill a hole for the wires to go thru and then leave enough wire do they can actually be hooked up but then seal off hole(s). the reason for doing this is because it saves me time and money... not much but its jsut easier this way, and my opinion for plexiglass is that itll look alot cleaner too Gunt2389 on 05/25/2005 20:47:19 Do i need any kind of screws or anything like that? or i found that IPS weld on 3... do you think thatll do that job good enough without screws? palmquist on 05/25/2005 22:31:16 most likely that should do it... theres only one instance i can think of where puting screws in could actually hurt your enclosure, is when you accidently crack the plexiglass... especially after uve already put the glue on and it is in the midst of drying or already is dry and attached to the other pieces of plexi.... but other than that if you wanted to take that risk go ahead but its not really necessary. also it could make a difference on which subs you use too, for example: how many subs, diameter(obviously the bigger the heavier), how many voice coils per each sub, motor. all that you have to take into account when building an enclosure, bc of the weight. if you use too thin of plexi then it mite cave in, but 1/2" to 5/8" or 3/4" should do just fine. also you mite want to think about bracing it if you have 2 subs for extra support. positioning could make a difference too. if you have the subs facing each other at all and put plexi over that, that would be an example of where you would put screws in http://www.vwcarconsult.no/catalog/images/FKRSX1202BN.jpg that little square in the middle is wut im talkign about... thats also a great pic for an example of a fully plexi box but if you just have the subs facing out then i see no need for you to use screws.... http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.blindbug.com/sale/images/subclosure02.jpg&imgrefurl=http://blindbug.com/sale/&h=480&w=640&sz=59&tbnid=img0bvwPtecJ:&tbnh=101&tbnw=135&hl=en&start=4&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dplexiglass%2Bsubwoofer%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8 thats a great example of subs facing outwards, i gave u that link so u could also see the site too... it has some info u mite want ( they used 3/4", just normal black terminal cups, it clearly states that they didnt use any screws[just chemical bonds] and other stuff worth your time) hope i can help you palmquist swez on 05/26/2005 18:47:00 Nice work PalmQ, Swez BgDustin4 on 05/27/2005 23:53:27 Sorry About the duble Topic i will look next time but thanks that helps a lot Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
