brand new '05 avalanche- premium bose system(sux)- 6-cd head unit. 1st question. does this system have its amp built into the head unit? or is it a seperate unit? if seperate, where is it located? 2nd. i know it sounds insane, but the wife doesn't want me to change out the headunit for a real one. is it possible to change out the amp for a better aftermarket one? why or why not? i would also change out the factory speakers with some cdt CL61's. would it sound like crap to change the amp and speakers, without changing the headunit? Replies (8) wolfsmane on 05/16/2005 20:59:14 oh yeah, one more..... the speakers grills in the doors..... do they just pry out with a screw driver? UKinstaller on 05/17/2005 00:23:37 the amp is located under the center console, pain in the butt to remove, but doable. it's a fairly good sized amp for a factory system. you can upgrade the factory amp and speakers, you'll just have to rewire everything. you can catch the speaker wires at the factory amp and wire from there. it will sound good even without upgrading the factory HU, but i think it's kind of pointless myself. stick you an Alpine PulseTouch in there and enjoy! speakers grills don't pop off, you have to remove the whole door. it's not hard though. great car, by the way. -UK wolfsmane on 05/17/2005 08:27:23 if you have time, could you elaberate a little more please. i can't just swap good amp for factory amp? it "has" to be rewired? does the factory amp have different hook-ups, connections that would cause me to have to rewire? no "wiring harness" that could be used to accomplish this? as far as the factory head unit, it's the wifes vehicle-her "minivan, soccer mom" vehicle.......and she REALLY likes the factory head unit, and WON'T let it be changed. i'm just trying to get loudness, and somewhat better clarity by wanting to go for a larger amp, better speaker combination. won't be installing any subs, just relying on what little bass the cdt's will give.......which will be MUCH better than the factory speaks. whatcha think? UKinstaller on 05/17/2005 09:30:33 well the problem is that, while the factory amp is pretty big, it is nowhere near as big as a decent 4 channel amp. you're going to have to relocate the amp somewhere else in the truck, so you'll have to extend the speaker wires to the location of the new amp, along with power, ground, and remote wires. there is no harness available for a conversion, you'll have to do it all manually. time consuming, but not hard. if you get an amp with high level inputs, you can use those instead of using RCA jacks, so that will help a little. may i suggest a 10 inch JL audio stealthbox to go under the front part of your center console, the part directly below the radio?? not too loud, EXCELLENT sound quality, only needs a 250w amp. you could get a nice 5 channel amp and run everything off that. plus, having a small sub right next to your legs when driving is pretty cool. i don't think any system is complete without a subwoofer, the difference in sound is amazing. you don't have to get anything loud, just something good and clean. -UK wolfsmane on 05/17/2005 09:45:15 thanks. i didn't know about 10 inch jl audio, i'll check that out. do you know of a link that will show me what it looks like? as far as the amp. i understand now. my thinking was this.....usually cheap amps, and factory amps, are rated much higher than they actually are. 2 amps of equal physical size, and say rated at 75 watts, 1 being a cheap amp, the other being a quality name brand,,, the cheap amp would do good if it could put out 20-25 actual watts, versus the quality amp putting out close to the actual stated 75 watts. isn't this correct thinking? i don't know how much space is available where the factory amp is located, but my thinking was to get a QUALITY name brand amp, the same physical size as the factory amp, and do the "swap". but this is not possible, correct? thanks for giving me your time, and info. ttocs on 05/17/2005 11:26:38 replacing the speakers will probably be alot more then you would thnk. Bose makes enclusures that mount into the door. You will have to remove the entire enclosure, leaving a big whole to put a small speaker. You will have to make a baffle to mount it to. The entire door panel will need to be removed to get access to the speakers unless they changed the '05s. That grill will just pry off, once the panel is removed. wolfsmane on 05/17/2005 12:03:36 thanks. sounds like a P.I.T.A !! i thought you could just pry off the grill and have access to the factory speakers. the factory speakers are not 6.5" ? cplkittle on 05/23/2005 01:06:37 Just finished a custom enclosure in an '04 avalanche. I put 4 diamond 8" subs and a diamond 1000.1 (RMS) amp all in the midgate. I trimmed it in a piece of 1/4 MDF covered in vinyl. It took me a little over 2 weeks to complete. One word of advice, the midgate is a PITA to cut. There are three layers to it. the front is abs plastic.. easy to cut, the back of it is a little thicker abs.. still not so bad. The center corrugated fiberglass epoxy type material will not cut easily and melts bosch wood and all purpose jig saw blades. Roto zip bits heat up and warp as well. I had to use several all purpose high dollar blades and a squirt bottle to keep the blade cool. The cutting took 8-10 hours. enough of the bad news.. the good news is that it is built well enough to support a decent sized MDF enclosure on the backside and still be fully functional.
