Okay, I had a little problem earlier today. I stopped at my work with my gf's brother in the car, and he thought it'd be fun to play wuth my stereo while I was inside. I'm not sure exactly what he did, but it appears he blew the Subwoofer output on my Kenwood x979. I don't know if this is even possible, but it's the only thing I can come up with. My sub amp has power to it, all fuses are intact, and as a test I connected the RCAs that are going to the amp for my comps to the sub amp, and I had sound through the sub. Now, is this something I could bring to a shop and have repaired (I'm not much of an electronics person) or is this probably something that I'll have to replace the entire HU to fix? I apologize if I'm not typing to clearly right now, I'm kind of blinded with rage. Thanks. Replies (6) swez on 05/14/2005 15:29:06 I would be too... ticked as all get out.... learn from it. Your info is very clear under the situation. Check the HU wires from the sub out RCA's and see if you can get anything from these leads on your full range amp. If yes, you still have signal present. If not, may have to trace back the sub RCA's to HU and see if they are loose or have indeed lost power for some reason. Question: Does your Comp amp have RCA outs that can be connected to your sub amp? If you have that feature, the sub amp should work this way. Swez PS I don't think it is normal to have the RCA circuits on the HU to fry. They are generall low voltage... 2.0 - 6.0 volts, depending on the HU. However, if that sub out is not working after the basic swap test, there are a few work-a-rounds we can suggest. Descent on 05/14/2005 16:23:10 Okay, thanks for the response. I don't have time to pull out my HU at the moment, but I see no reason why the wires would of all of a sudden come loose. Yes, my comp amp had outputs to connect to my sub amp, which I tried, and yes, the sub was working this way. So, as far as I can tell, it seems to be something in my HU. Another thing I noticed is that if you go into the menu on my HU to change the SW level, the menu is greyed out, like the unit doesn't think anything is hooked up to it. I'll try hooking up the SW output wires to my full range and see if I get any signal, but right now, I'm gonna go get some damn ice cream. compvr15s on 05/14/2005 17:34:55 some head units have selectable rear rca outputs. im not familiar with kenwood too much, but there sould be a menu where you can change this from rear/ to sub maybe even even an off mode, if he accidently switched it to off(not sure if there is even an off option) but if there and it is off, no signal from the rear/sub output... if it did somehow get messed up, atleast you can still use the output from your mids/highs to pass through to your sub amp. check the manual and see what it has to say. swez on 05/14/2005 19:00:56 Agreed.... that's a very good comment there Comp VR. Check your HU programming manual for setting up the SW outs. Bet that is all there is to it. It's been de-activated. (Thanks Jr.) "When the going gets tough. the tough go for ice cream" !!! SMILE Swez Descent on 05/14/2005 19:31:39 Well, I wish it was that easy. I took a look at the manual, and poked around with my HU a bit more. Couldn't find anything regarding turning off the subIf I can run the wires through my full range amp, but I think I see a few issues with that. I had the level of the ouputs to my full range set different than I had my sub set at. And also, would I still get the full signal going to the sub, even though I'm going through a preout designated for front speakers? Er..and I hate to use a hack solution like this. It just doesn't make me happy. I wish I could pinpoint exactly what the problem is, if it isn't a setting on the HU. swez on 05/15/2005 12:34:04 Contact Alpine Tech Service and ask them for a few tips.
