Smoking Head Unit

ok, I'm a 17 year old girl, I know almost nothing about car stereos, but I need to at least be pointed in a general direction here....

I just bought a 90' chevy s10, and it came with a JVC 200W KD-S890 head unit. There's wiring for speakers behind the seat, but the seller took them out before sale. So the only place sound comes (came) from is the dash speakers. The whole set up functioned fine until a few days ago. When I started the truck, the sound kept cutting in and out. I popped the head unit off (intending to replace it) and smoke started coming out from the base cd player area. It smelled electrical. After that, the speakers ceased to function at all. If I replace the head unit, it turns on and works fine, but no sound from speakers. My question is if anyone knows what may have caused this, how I could possibly get it fixed, etc...

Probably not a big deal to those who have some knowledge here, but I am completely lost.

if i was you i would, pull the deck out, check for any wires that are fried and touching, mainly, the red, black, and yellow wires, and check the fuse if it has one, should be located right next to where the wires plug into the back of the head unit, if its not blown, then the internal amp may have went bad, but usualy when speakers cut out its a grounding issue, as for the magical smoke never a good sign, lol, so may have major problems, good luck

more then likely there are some speaker wires behind the seat that shorted out? But then again you never know whos cousin put that stuff in, and how many band-aids he used while installing it.

If you saw smoke come out of it there is probably little you can do other they repair er replace. You can take the radio out pretty easy if it is the old dash as I remember(airvents above radio, sliding ashtray below). Remove the ash tray and there will be two screws. remove then and then carefully remove the plastic trim that surrounds the radio. Now there should be two screws(7mm er 9/32") that are on the side of the kit, holding the radio. REmove them and the radio will be out.

All wiring should be neat, and insulated. You should not see ANY bare wire behind the dash, behind the seat, well, anywhere.....

even though comp and ttocs have pretty muched covered it, i want to put my own two cents into the pot. My friend had a problem similiar, almost identical to this, and what was happening was that a wire to a speaker had been stripped, and was touching the casing that holds the Head unit in the dash. From what i gathered from it, it grounded out to Head unit, and fried It. Although it may not be fried, im willing to bet if you saw smoke, then the internal amp is three sheets to the wind.

well thank you all.....i hope this wont be too expensive to fix, its kind of a pain in the ass.

Yes, it is a PITA... but if done right the first time, usually problem free.

Also, many shops will install a new HU free if you buy it from them. Since you already have the mounts, this should be minmal down time and a quick install for a Pro.

I see decent HU's out there for under $150.00, installed. The questiion is, do you want rear speakers too?

Dave, We can put up a post where all our innovative members can put up many short forms of cussing words....lol.. then we can all use them and use them freely without worrying about breaking the PG ( Parental Guidance ) status of this site...THINK

welcome to the forum. Alot of people start here knowing as much as you do and hang out, do some reading, ask some ?'s and make fun of each other at the same time. You will be suprised what you know, and what you can learn. Look over our fact section before asking as there are alot of common ?'s already answered there.

Another benifit of hangin out here is you would be the first regular that was a girl... Too many dudes in this hobby......... But from your perspective that could be a good thing.

There are some simple ways to check the deck we can walk you through, but it will be easier to take it out and go to a shop to have it bench tested or checked out.

well i had my dad take my cd deck out for me so we could look at the wiring....its all clean. ill have to get it checked out later, cant afford it right now.

I'm attempting to learn as much about this stuff as I can so that I won't have to rely on males later ;-) I know some stuff about cars performance-wise...Less so on the technical and mechanical details.

Good for you... learn what you can, as you can. "Relying on males?" Well, this is a male dominated hobby. You are most welcome to join the clan if you wish. Who knows, you might be skilled enough in time, to become a Gold... if you wish. That would sure be a nice change huh guys.

That smoke issue is the most troubling part of this posting. Need to find out what fried and why. Our noses are a good source for detecting that burnt smell. But then we have to isolate where it came from and correct that issue too. Sniff out the HU (deck) and see if you can detect burnt wires or components in same. If really adventerous, can attempt to remove the covers and look inside for charred remains of wiring, PC board or components.

If you find that to be OK, the next step would be to check out the dash area for burnt/bare wires. They would need to be repaired or replaced as well.

Good luck and keep us posted,
Swez
