A pair of 6.5" rounds, tend to sound better than 6x9 ovals. Is there a reason why you prefer 6x9's?

cut.

It can be done if you build a baffle over the existing hole. The main problem is you will have to build it up high enough so that the basket will fit since it will be wider on one side. It may or may not look good depending on how much time you take to design
it.

I'll expand on that and hazard a guess that it would not look good.....

If you try to hack out a 6x9 hole where the 6.5" rounds are now, I predict you will have a situation my uncle often called...

"A hammered CRAP job" !!!

(picture that one in your mind... take a hammer to 2 lbs of fresh dog poop) That's the reference point I am eluding to.

Seriously, use 6.5" rounds there and all is well.

if the job is done with a tin snip, it'll look Ghetto. Sound will be nearly the same as 6x9s are basically a 7.25" speaker. If you have speaker grills, it won't look too bad.

Measure twice, cut once.
