I traded in my 97 cavalier today for an 04 Cavalier LS Sport. Now it has the premium sound so before i install my old setup im just going to take my time since it sounds decent. Now my ? is this when I put my aftermarket Alpine HU in my speakers will be fine right? I wont have to do anything to it to keep the premium sound? I know when i put my front speakers in i'll have to run new wire to my deck to bypass the amp for the fronts.(i wont be doing that for awhile though). When i decide to put my sub and amp in how to i bypass the factory sub and stuff? Thanks Replies (8) UKinstaller on 05/7/2005 23:57:45 you don't have to do anything to keep the premium sound, but.... in order to put an aftermarket radio in your car, you have to get a part from Metra called the GMRC-01. it's the wiring harness for your car, but it also has the door chime integration feature built into it, and it has a built in ignition wire for the aftermarket radio instead of having to manually run one from the ignition harness. you have to use that harness or else you will have problems with door chimes, oil change, and check engine lights. at circuit city, we sell them for like $65. it sucks, but it's a must. -UK p.s. did you put the radio in your 97 cavalier?? same shindig as the 2004, entire dash has to come off. ryan2 on 05/8/2005 11:58:22 Yea i know how to take the dash off and stuff. So is this the harness that you still need to keep your factory radio pluggged into? Also if i dont want to keep the premium sound and just put in my speakers, sub, and amp to i still need to buy this harness? UKinstaller on 05/8/2005 21:40:02 no you don't have to keep the radio in the car, that's only on newer Chevy Impalas. regardless of whether you want to keep the premium sound, you have to use the GMRC-01, or else you will have problems with oil change and check engine lights. also, it lets you keep your door chimes. technically you could do it without the harness, but you would: 1) lose your door chimes 2) have to run an ignition wire 3) as mentioned earlier, will have problems w/ check engine light. i STRONGLY recommend using it. -UK ryan2 on 05/8/2005 23:19:43 Ok thanks. But are there certain harness's even for older cars that make you keep the radio. Im asking because we put a harness like that in my friend cavalier its anywhere from a 1999-2002. I saw a harness on crutchfield for $80, so i'll go to my local shop and ask them. UKinstaller on 05/9/2005 09:23:14 you don't need that. that's a GM T harness, and you only have to use it on Impalas. you don't have to use it on any other car, and you didn't need it on your friends' cavalier. -UK ryan2 on 05/14/2005 22:35:36 Alright i picked up the harness and my ALpine Ipod adapter. Cant wait to get these hooked up. Probably wait a week or two since next week is my last week of school. UKinstaller on 05/15/2005 01:20:07 sounds good man. those ipod adaptors are the coolest. they are now integrating ipods into factory gm, volkswagen, bmw, mercedes, toyotas, and honda's. the adapter for those is like $159, but they are worth it. we just increased the price of the GMRC-01 you need for your cavalier from $60 to $90. it's soooooo stupid, you know those things only cost like $10 to make, if that. have fun with the install, cut the plastic out behind the radio to make it mount straighter, sometimes those bad boys can look crooked. -UK ryan2 on 05/16/2005 11:52:00 Yea it rediculous on the price. Your paying so much for a stupid little speaker. The Peripheral GMCO I got was $80 and Crutchfield sells theres for $84 i believe. Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
