Will 2 amps be too much for the alternator?

Hi there. I've got a 1997 Toyota Camry CE (4 cylinder). I'm not sure how many amps the alternator puts out. I have an Alpine MRP-F240 amp.. and was wondering if I bought an Alpine MRP-M350 amp if it would make my lights dim? Would it be bad to have 2 amps hooked up? If so, what can I do to resolve the issue of having 2 amps in the car? Thanks.

Those 2 amps shouldn't cause you any electrical problems, even with a 2ohm load on that class D amp you should be fine.

(I'm assuming the 4ch amp has 4 speakers connected, each with a 4ohm load, and the class D amp isn't going to be hooked up with anything less than a 2ohm load???)

Yep.. the 4 channel amp is hooked up to 4 4ohm alpine type s speakers.. and the mono amp would be probably hooked up to a 4ohm sub... not sure yet though..

Might be cutting it close here on the amp pairs noted. The F240 will not be an issue. However, depending on the net load you feed the sub amp and power it draws from electricals, could see some to considerable light dimming at idle.

The F240 will draw a nominal 15-20A which is minor.
The M350 will draw closer to 30A @ 4 ohms, 35A + @ 2ohms. So, looking at a max draw near 55A here at full output for the system.

Need to find out what the stock ALT power is at idle and peak output values. If under 85A. and a small BAT, dimming is likely at idle. A larger BAT can help to a good degree. (current buffer) But some careful planning and upgrading the "Big Three" wires will also help.

Thanks for the info guys! Swez, is there a tutorial online on how to upgrade the big three wires? Would a high output alternator be a good idea if I get two amps going? Do you know of any downfall to an HOA? Are they bad for the engine? Thanks.

Here is a the URL to a step by step Big 3 Upgrade complete w/ pics.

I have found that doing a Big 3 Upgrade, as well as going to a Deep Cycle battery; such as: Optima or Stinger(I use the Optima Red Top 1000 CA 800 CCA 110 RC) has made a major difference in the performance of my system.

Another thing to consider is the quality of wire you use, lower quality wire has more resistence than higher quality, higher strand count wire. Personally I prefer Streetwires wiring, RCA's and accessories.

Very good tuitorial.

Hey Less, care to write an article (paraphrased in your own words) for the DIY side of our board and link this to same. I can do it too... but don't want to infringe on your "THUNDER".

Thanks,
Swez

Hey less... I've got Lighting Audio cables... It's the SCK4 amp wiring kit with 4 gauge power/ground.

4 ga should be fine, and if you are refering to RCA cables, LA are not too bad, especially fo rthe price. The wire and RCA's I try to keep people away from are the ones they sell at Walmart, you might as well use welding cable or the residential cable they sell at Home Depot, the resistance is very high. I try to suggest LA, Rockford Fosgate, JL Audio, Stinger, dB Link, etc... Knukonceptz makes good wire, fairly new company, but the wire and RCA's are affordable and made well. Just try to stay clear of the very cheap stuff, most of it is not well shielded and has very high resistance, which we all know is not good.

When I get time swez, I will do a tutoral and take pics of my own upgrade for reference and example. It is a matter of finding time. I may do one on wire and cables also, I just finished reading the 05 version of the JL Audio Sound School of Excellence, my whole view on wire, capacitors, and RCA's has changed, especially after doing some of my own testing.

Great! That sounds like a plan. When you can, as you can.... write one up and submit it for install.
