I say let em do the work. I also think death row inmates should be allowed to volunteer for scientific and medical studies that would be too dangerous for the average person, but highly beneficial in finding cures or new treatments with various diseases and such... uochronos on 04/27/2005 14:07:02 wow a union causeing more problems then solutions... i dont belive that.... so the state transportation workers think they should get paid 20$ an hour to pick the stuff up instead of saving trhe tax payers millions.... i mean it would be horrible if all the money saved went towards actualy road repairs and improvments and created more work wouldnt it... basicaly they have a budget right that means they arnt going to underspend there budget by too much or they wont get as much next time... so if worker save money because they are underpaid criminals then the money will be spent else where and create more hours.. anyway defaintly great how a union yet again makes things worse swez on 04/27/2005 14:14:40 They have been doing this in MI for a long time. I see inmate cleanup crews on the highways and even in the the state parks, doing such work. A few years ago, was fishing at a state park lake site and was posted that folks leave the park at 10:00 PM. They have gates and locks to close after that. Well, I went out to the gate at 9:45 PM and they were already locked and it was the last day of the season too. Noooo way out as this place was buttoned up tighter than Sing-Sing. Obviously, I wound up sleeping in my car that night. Kinda chilly to... low 40's. Well, 8:00 AM rolled around and I awake to the sound of chain saws and brush cutters. Turns out, the State correctional team was in there with inmate laborers doing a Fall trim. The Sherrif in charge spotted me, told me to get back in my car and then motioned me to proceed toward him. He said" How in the %$@*&^ did you get in here"? I got locked in overnight! Fortunately, he had keys and let me out the main gate. I think it shook him up a bit to see me there that morning. I don't know what the problem was... all the inmates I saw were women. Imagine that... being trapped in a State park with 20+ LONELY WOMEN. Some of them looked pretty good, in their orange jumpsuits. So what if they had chain saws and such. I was in no real danger... except for mayby getting raped. Dunno, is it actually rape if one consents? SMILE Swez MrBrownstone on 04/27/2005 19:53:19 Swez Your nickname at the women's prison could be 'The Professor' because of all the women you've educated over the past 60 years. :-) snipe523 on 04/27/2005 21:23:19 Heh me and my buddy had a prison work crew help us get my buddies truck out of a spot we got stuck in last year while ice fishing. My buddy decided to drive down this road that looked like it was fine but about half way down the truck broke through the top of the snow pack and the frame got hung up on a thick ass layer of ice underneath. WE got it to move about twenty feet in 30min before he remembered that there was a work crew up the hill. He went up to ask to borrow a shovel and the Guard said to hell with that, these guys would be glad to come get you out of there lol. WE spent the next 30-45 minutes with like 20 inmates and a couple guards working our balls off getting this truck out of that road. alanjlamore on 04/27/2005 21:58:59 uochronos, you hit it right on the head. When I was in the Navy, every time October came around our command was looking for suggestions on what they would need to spend money on because the amount of $ they get next year was dependant on how much they "had to" spend this year. What a waste of money. We need an accountant in charge of government spending. I've seen soooooo many things while in the Navy that could save tax payer TONS of money. Okay, I know I've been getting on my soap box a lot here lately (at least I feel like I have compared to how much I usually post). I like these "off-topic" posts here every once in a while. It gives us a sence of community, kinda. ttocs on 04/27/2005 22:10:22 We see them on the side of the highways all the time here. Sherrif joe loves to have them pick up trash and would keep doing it even if there was a law suit. We are one of the few states to have female chain gaings, as well as juvinile.... Joe is a little different, ever heard of tent city? That man knows how to save money on prisoners. Stick em in tents outside of the prison no matter what the weather(can range from 40's to well over 110). They eat expired bologna that is still consumable, but may have some colored spots on it... They also dress them in pink, they say it is cheaper. swez on 04/30/2005 11:09:17 Yes, I think I saw a piece on that guy on History Channel. He has hords of workers that live in tents and repay their debts to society in the form of good old fashion hard work. As I recall, his rate of return criminals out on parole was very low too. I think we need more Joe's like him to put things back in order. A good dose of "hard labor" does cure lazy thieves. Especially if they know what will happen if they come back to ol' Joes' camp. I have also read/heard that it costs about $40-60K/year to keep an inmate. Why not get some return on the taxpayers money? If they ran a prision like a "boot camp", I imagine the men in these situations would have a whole new attitude about life when they leave prison. Slave labor??? Why not... they don't have rights and why let them sponge off the taxpayers while they do their time? I'd like to see that for the crimes our govt officials commit as well. Give em a dose of blue collar work ethics. That would be enough to scare many would be "spongers" into working for the people and not for themselves. Just my silly notions of justice! GRIN Swez ttocs on 04/30/2005 18:12:09 He feeds them for just dollars a day. They wear pink outfits as he claims they are cheaper.. They recently opened a state of the art prison/holding facility down town. There was a big piece on it when it opened as his only quote was that it was too nice.....
