Hello... I have a question about pre-out voltages... I have a Panasonic CQ-C5401 which has 5V pre-outs. I am looking at an Alpine MRP-F240 amp which is only rated for up to 4V input (according to Alpine's website). Has anyone had experience with this amp? Can it handle a 5V pre-out? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Replies (4) swez on 04/21/2005 10:03:06 That's 5 volts max output. By setting the amp gains to 4, you will get full power from the HU at ~60% of HU volume control settings. Most HU's deliver full power at ~75-80% of max volume. In your case, max output will be available at a lower HU volume setting. What is needed, is a careful evaluation of what HU settings are appropriate for your amp to reach full output. If we go past that number (voltage out at RCA's) we will be clipping the amp and sending large amounts of distortion to our speakers. We can benchmark that by measuring the output voltage to the speakers, off the amps or by ear. The best way to do this by ear is to get out of the car, open the doors and stand 10-15 feet back from the car and listen. If you hear shrill highs, harsh mids and muddy lows, the amp is clipping. Turn down the HU volume to correct this as clipped audio signals can be very bad for speakers and subs. You could probably put 3x the preamp voltage into your amplifier without harming it. Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
