I was just wondering about some of the 'old school' amps on eBay (PPI art series or SoundStream reference amps). I see they have very nice old equipment (from 80's) with some very impressive numbers (low THD etc...). I was just wondering if after years of use do amplifiers lose their rated power output? Replies (2) ttocs on 04/19/2005 11:49:18 it is possable but not likely. Most of the old school stuff like you are talking about just lasts for ever. I have seem punch 45 amps that looked like they were mounted to the tires of old cars that still worked. Same with the ppi art series.... swez on 04/19/2005 20:12:33 Lose power with age? The filter caps (lage electrolytic jobs) used in the power supply can become leaky after a few years and that could cut down on the output capacity of the amp in time. Best way to find out, is to perform a voltage output test on the amp. (bench test) With the proper setups, a 4 ohm dummy load resistor and a good power supply, we can calculate the wattage coming out of the amp by measureing AC voltage.
