More Confused; But Learning; Help Needed

Hi All,

I'm more than slightly confused at this point; and would just like a basic answer as to which of these options is best for SQL (I am planning on a sealed enclosure)

I am planning on buying the Alpine MRD-M605 Mono Amp and am wondering what configuriation would work best.

The Amp is rated at:

RMS Power at 12V into 2 ohms 400W x 1
RMS Power at 12V into 4 ohms 250W x 1
RMS Power at 14.4V into 2 ohms 600W x 1

Now here are my options as I see them;
(The NEW Type R's are 500 watts rms and the X is 1000)

1) 1 Type R DVC 2 ohm x 2 (4 Ohm Load)
500w rms sub recieving 250w of rms power

2) 1 Type R DVC 4 Ohm x 2 (2 Ohm Load)
500w rms sub receiving between 400-600 w rms of amp
power

3) 2 Type R DVC 2 ohm x 2 (2 Ohm Load)
2 500w rms subs receiving between 200-300w of rms
power each (I Do Believe). Overall 1000w rms sub power
getting 600 w rms amp power.

4) 1 Type X DVC 4 ohm x 2 (2 Ohm Load)
1000w rms sub receiving between 400-600 w rms of amp
power

As I am fairly new to all of this I will throw in a link to my 2 previous posts which if need be will give you a better understanding.

If a few of you could point me in the right direstion on this that would be much appreciated -- Thank-You

Hey, I've been looking to power that same sub (Type R) and have been asking about amps to run it.

I was also looking at that amp, but am deciding to go with the Kenwood X811d (although that Alpine looks so good it was hard to give up).

Here's the link of where I asked about it:
http://www.clubknowledge.com/Car_Audio_FAQ/?g3242_1805

It's cheaper than the Alpine amp and puts out 919W rms at 2ohms (it says Power Output at 2 Ohms, at 12V 600 Watts x 1
- Power Output at 2 Ohms, at 14.4V 800 Watts x 1
- Power Output at 4 Ohms, at 12V 300 Watts x 1
- Power Output at 4 Ohms, at 14.4V 400 Watts x 1,
BUT the CEA-2006 STANDARD (which I've heard is more accurate) rates this amp at:
- R.M.S. Power Output (1-Ohm): 1016 Watts
- R.M.S. Power Output (2-Ohms): 919 Watts
- R.M.S. Power Output (4-Ohms): 533 Watts

Here's the amp's link:

I plan on getting a dual 2ohm sub for right now, and running it at 4ohms, then I can buy another one later and hook the 2 subs up with a 2ohm load and still be giving both subs all the power they need.

Just wanted to throw that out there since I've been asking about a similar setup, and got great advice here about both the sub and amp.

The Kenwood Amp is a very nice piece of egipment, unfortunately, it would probably cause me to do quite a few electricl upgrades to the car I have at the moment.

I am looking at having my current car for this summer and probably next and then getting a newer one; which I would be willing to put the money into to upgrade; but at this time that is not a feasible option.

So would someone kindly give me some advice as to which configuration of sub(s) I should go with -- with the ones I have listed.

Thanks for all your help guys; much appreciated.

Seems to me, your best overall option is to use an Alpine 4+4 DVC, wired in parallel for a net 2 ohm load. (500-600 Wrms from amp)

With that amp noted, just 100 Wrms over the sub specs for RMS power handling, but with intelligent gain settings and a well designed enclosure, should be no problem for an Alpine Typr R.

If you chose a dual sub system, a pair of SWS series 2+2 subs is the golden target. (2 ohms net to amp) Yes, can use SWE or SWR susb as well... just make sure the pair are either 4 ohm SVC's, (net 2 ohms) or 2+2 DVC's.

Some careful shopping will get you a very good price off e-bay or google searches. Do you want a single 12" or a pair of 10's here?

any of the stated ways will work... honestly i would stay away from the type X while it would work with only 500watts rms its not going to work to full potential. as for 1 or 2 type R's 1 type R in a sealed box with 600watts is going to be very nearly as louad as 2 type R's in sealed boxes with 600waatts... you might gain 1 or 2db but to the human ear it will not be noticable really.

for me personaly i would go with single type R... really the biggest didffernce i see between the R and X is more pwoer handling the 1 i heard didnt seem to have alot better SQ or anything just got louder...

so the choice is yours but i think you will get the best sound and volume from a single type R or a single type X if you wanna spend the extra money and not use all of its ability..

This is true, adding another Type R is not going to be very noticable b/c you may gain 1 dB, where in the right enclosure, 1 Type R would sound just as loud as 2, the human ear really does not notice anything under a 3 dB gain, doubtfully even that. 600 wRMS to a Type R, w/ the correct gain setting as Swez said, a good solid well built sealed enclosure as uochronos said, and may I add some proper tuning. If you wanted it to be louder, you could always build a vented/ported enclosure and that would probably give you more gain that adding another Type R in sealed enclosure. I think Alpine jumped on the SPL bandwagon w/ the Type X.
