Phoenix Gold comparison

Hey, I just found a PG sale at one of the online car audio stores I go to a lot and was just curious on people's oppinion of their equipment quality/cost ratio.

Right now I'm pretty much set on the Alpine Type R dual 4ohm 12" sub and I'm still shopping for an amp.

I know the Octane are kind of their lower line of products, and from what I hear there's a lot better for the price, right?

But, I also hear that their other lines of products are much better in quality, but I'm not sure about cost.

Do they have a comparable sub to the Type R? The one I was looking at was the Phoenix Gold Xenon X12D4.

Or do they have a good amp that would be as good as or better than the new Alpine line or MTX amps (for the Type R sub or a comparable PG sub)?

Just curious as I still have a bit of time before commiting to anything and figgured that I can still shop around a bit.

In case anyone wanted to look at the sale I was talking about it was through cardomain.

Thanks,

in my opion phoenix golds only downfall is price... octane R may be there low series but are still much better then many other amp brands..

there subs are good defintly perform to spec but i would say the alpines may be a better sub... though i havent listened to the xenons yet.

as for amps if i could afford it i would go 100% with PG amps they are just incredibly strong and versitile... if you can find a good deal on them go for it would be my advice just make sure you get what you need... the tantrum series also is there mid series and a very good performer.

IMO if you are looking for the best bang for your buck look into Elemental Designs amps especially the nine.2 which does 400W rms at 4ohm bridged and the Elemental Designs 13Kv2d2 or an Ascendant Audio Atlas 12. Either one of those subs will match up great with that amp and they are not at all expensive. Also each of those subs should have no problem out performing the Alpine for lrss money and they come with longer warranties. I am not quite sure on the atlas but the Kv2 comes with a 3 year waranty.

You say will outperform the Alpine, but you do not mention how. Maybe in SPL, but doubtfully in in SQ, the Alpine Type E's, Type S's and Type R's are very hard to beat in SQ for the money, The Type R's sound just as good as my JL W3V2's for about $50 less. The PG amps are very good amps, from their lower end lines all the way up to the higher end ones. They are reliable, versitle, and produce. If you can find a good deal on PG I'd go for it. I have seen some of the Elemental Designs stuff, it seems like a good deal, and the prices are right, but it has yet to prove itself in reliability, performance, and versitility. All specs sound good, it is in the real world that they are proven. When I start seeing their products placing at sanctioned events, they will have proved themselve w/ me. IMHO, I'd stick to products that have been proven over time to be reliable and perform.

I have owned various ED products over the past couple years including a couple of their K series and have owned a few Type-R's and I will tell you flat out the K will out do the Type-R in both SQ and SPL. The Type-R is a nice sub and is not bad for the money but I just think from my experience I would go with the K, especially for the $125 price tag. Also I am currently running an ED Nine.2($215) on my components and this thing is absolutely wonderful. I replaced my Clarion APX400.4 with this amp and the NINE.2 gives my speakers a much more natural and warm sound. After swapping there is no way I would go back, and I will be keeping this amp until the day it dies. Also after all the ED products I have owned I have yet to have a problem with a single one of them.

That was my opinion, sorry to touch a nerve, but I stick behind my opinion, until I see them placing At MECA, and other sanctioned competition organizations, I would prefer to deal w/ manufacturers I know. You say it will outperform the Type R in SQ, I have owned several different subs over my 23 yrs of car audio experience, for a sub in the $100-$200 price range, the Type R is very hard to beat, going by MSRP anyway. I'm not here to argue, just give good advice and back it up w/ specs and stats. Sorry I offended your E.D. products, I did not know they were that special to you!

I am in no way offended by anything you said. Just stating what I have experienced through using both products. As I stated while I think the Alpine is a nice sub I don't think that the K series can be beat for the price. Also ED's subs are built by Image Dynamics so I don't think you have to worry about the quality. This is just my opinion and by no means am I saying your opinion is wrong. Just looks like our opinions vary slightly.

i also have seen ed stuff in action ...in fact that is all my cousin buys.....hes had several differnt versions of their woofers...and amps...sound quality is very good.....and spl is awesome.....but i myself have owned type r's and they aint no punk neither......its a tough call

I think when you get into quality subs, it is a hard call. If you know about Resonant Engineering, you can get the SE 12 (600RMS/1200MAX) for $190 ea. shipped and they are some awesome subs. I will be looking into E.D., I have yet to hear anything bad about them, which means over time they will get a rep, if you remember Ample Audio, everyone talked them up like crazy, but their stuff just was not as good as everyone stated, I was very dissappointed, same w/ Audiobahn.... That is why I like to stick to manufacturers I know. The audio shop I purchased my amps from practically had to cut their throats on the sale to get me to try Diamond Audio amps, I'm very happy w/ them, but I was skeptical. Just the way I am. I will do some research on E.D.

RE makes som eawsome subs. Only thing you have to watch with them is most of there stuff other than there re line takes a good amount of power to get them moving. Once you get them moving though they are great. Of course having the power to get them moving is only a concern if you are on a strict budget PROUD

just a mention on ED subs i too own one and belive they are great subs but the current design seems flawed, another member of CK just bought one a 15Ov2 and the first one the cone seperated withen a day so he sent it back the second one seperated withen an hour. then the thrd one arived and did same..

he went threw 4 or 5 subs in like a month and ED techs told him it was a issue they where having with there subs not his setup... so i would hold off on the ED subs for awhile

As for there amps they are the same amps that Avionixx had pretty much hell the cases look identical thats because from what i understand ED and Avionixx merged. now lets remember that avionixx amps where known for failing... I own a avionixx 1200.2 and love it no problems but i thought i would bring these issues into light..

as for a PG sub beating a Alpine sub there are defiantly a few PG subs that outperform a type R but they will also cost you more then a type R.

Yea, I have an Avionixx 800.4 (125W rms per ch. or 400W rms with 2 ch. briged).

I use 2 of the channels for my CDT components and I WAS using the other 2 channels bridged to one sub to put out 400W rms at 4ohms. Well, one of the rear channels broke so I've been using the other working channel hooked up to 2 subs (2ohms) to put out 200W rms (100 per sub).

This is what originally made me decide to get a new class D amp for the subs, then I figgured I only wanted one sub, then decided on a 12" sub, then decided to see if there's a better sub for the money than the Infinity Perfect that I had, then I decided to sell my 2 10s and buy the 12" Type R, then decided on an amp to run it...

That's my story in a nut shell.
The PG sub I was trying to compare to the Type R sub was the Phoenix Gold Xenon X12D2 (500W rms) that I found for $170 + s&h
(about $50 more than what I can find the Type R for)

alanjlamore on 04/15/2005 15:56:29
Okay, I just looked on ebay and can actually find that sub (Xenon X12D2) a little cheaper than the Alpine Type R.

Would you say these 2 subs compare closely? They're both rated to take 500W rms...

lessismorespl on 04/15/2005 18:16:53
Personally, I only have experience w/ PG amps, and the Basscube, never really used the speakers. I really liked the amps. R.E. subs are power hungry, personally I like the SE series, but would love to try a couple XXX's.....but power and money are a problem, to drive 2 XXX 12's would take some serious investing on my part, not only in amps, but in electrical upgrades. I'm seriously considering the SE's though. I still believe for SQ the Type R is hard to beat, but I have not heard the Xenon X12D2, so I can't compare. I do know I have 2 JL W3V2's and kind of miss my Type R's.
