Does anyone have some general recommendations for box volumes for 6x9's & 5 1/4's? They're Sony Explodes (yeah, I know, snicker, snicker). There are no specs for this with the speakers. Replies (2) swez on 04/12/2005 11:20:05 The cone area of both speakers are pretty close in value. However, the woofer materials used, SPL efficiency ratings and low end characteristics may be a bit different. Know that you will not get any useful data from Sony on this one too. Trust me! However, some general testing I have done with a 5.25" MB/MR driver, suggests an enclosure of 0.1 - 0.30 ft^3 is a good starting point. The larger box nets lower bass response in the 60 Hz., range. That's from some basic testing I had done on a 5.25" driver from Bahn. In a 0.1 ft^3 enclosure, I was very surprised with how well these sounded in a sealed coffee container (Folgers) and a handful if polyfill. (6.25" H; 6.25" D and ~.125" T cylinder design) The thin walls did deform with bass pressure for sure, but the overall sound was just short of amazing to me. (really!) Not a very scientific test to be sure, but the general audio performance I heard from this test, told me I was on to something useful... just not optimized. If you go with a common Q-Logic wedge design, Wedge-style dimensions: 12-1/4"W x 8-1/4" front height x 5-1/8" rear height x 7"D enclosure suitable for 6x9" or 5.25" speakers. (this is using 1/2 - 5/8" MDF) This will net just over 0.3 ft^3 By changing the "D" dimension, you can shink the box according to optimal internal airspace for your drivers of choice. Note: Some speakers sounds very good in smaller enclosures and less deep bass. However, for more deep bass performance, go for the larger enclosure size. If the bass is too sloppy or whoppy at power ratings, drop to a smaller enclosure space by changing the D" figure. If you use these numbers as a "general point of reference and go from there, bet you will very pleased with results on either speaker size mentioned. Use a HPF above 60 Hz as well. The subs will fill in the rest. Comments, Swez gearhead on 04/12/2005 11:29:29 Thanks Swez. I'm just playing around building a home sound system using car audio stuff. I figure just about anything I cob together will sound better than the 2 dinky speakers that are built into the TV. Of course, I could be wrong. Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
