Dust Cap

Does the dust cap on a speaker cone serve any other function other then, well, as a dust cap? Other than cosmetics, is there any downside to a sloppy replacement job of a dustcap?

it uh keeps dust out lol.... anyway i wouldnt replace it sloppy like but they are very easy to replace you need a decent glue and then just glue it right one... some glues well damage the speaker cone though so read the package before buying it will say what it can be used on.

you could use silicone - thats what i did REALLY sloppily i might add - i did a bad job too... missed this one area and havent had time to go back and redo it (dont use the speakers anymore use diff ones) but the dust cap rattled... LOUD and annoying.... i put electrical tape over it so no dust got in but it rattled nonetheless

just telling you my experiences in sloppy work lol

Dust cap can also provide air cooling to coil(s), depends on sub design. Some cool through the Cap, other cool through a rear vent hole or side venting.

As for glues... definitely not Silicone. Too hard to clean up, depending on cone and cap materials used. There are specialty glues used for dust caps. Depends on the materials. (Paper, phenolics, poly etc.)

I think Parts Express carries dust caps and glues as well. Here are 2 to consider.

I'm not going to be doing any repairs. I picked up a set of 5 1/4" Blaupunkt speakers and one of them had the dust cap reglued. It's centered on the cone, it's just not cosmetically "neat". It looks like a solid repair job though. Thanks for the info.
