not as loud as it should be

Was helping out a friend with his system and can't figure out why it isn't that loud.

His car is a 93 Buick Century

HU: Aiwa CDC-X207
Front Speakers: Pioneer 4x6 (not sure which model)
Rear Speakers: Pioneer 6x9 (not sure which model)
Subwoofer: 12" Rockford Fosgate P212S4 200 W RMS
Sub amp: Lightning Audio B200.2 bridged for 200Wx1
1/2 Farat Capicator
8ga wiring

Box seems fine, Don't feel any air coming out and the cone isn't easy to push in. Box dimension is 15"x15"x10" using .75 MDF so it's about .90 cu ft

The amp is grounded to the capicator and the capicator is grounded to the car... could this be the problem? and also the ground cable is about 3 feet long it's grounded to a piece of metal that seems to be connected to the floor pan.

The car doesn't have any sound dampening materials in but he plans get some sound dampening materials sometimes during the summer.

Any ideas? if you need any more information, let me know

Are we talking not much Bass performance here?

That sub is well matched for the amp and enclosure specs noted. May want to do some adjustments on the amp "GAIN" control. May have gain set too low. Not able to find much detail on that HU model number noted. Do you know the preamp output voltage for same?

Assume the HU is putting out ~2 volts preamp voltage through RCA's to amp. Set amp gain to ~2 volts and adjust fro max bass w/o excess distortion of bass.

just figured out the problem, turns out that i had the speaker wires reversed... once i switched it, it worked fine

I overlooked this... turned out to be something really simple... but thanks for the help anyway.

The HU has 2.2v preamp voltage... just in case anybody wanted to know

okay there seems to be one more problem with this setup. Everything seems to work fine but there is like this "sssss" sound kinda like a whistle... it's there when music is playing or when the volume is on 0 but if the HU is turned off then it's gone. anybody know what this is?

It's more than likely alternator whine. When in park, w/ the volume down,if you raise the RPM's of the vehicle, does the pitch of the sound go up as well? Check to make sure you have very solid grounds. This is a good FAQ from Swez.

After that, report back, then we can look @ other sources.
90% of the time this is what the problem is.

THINK I think it is a ground problem, you said 3' ground, and it is grounded to the capacitor which is drawing constant power from the main power cable. Cut your ground down to 12-14 inches and ground the amp and cap seperately about 3-6 inches apart. Remember to unhook the battery ground, then remove the RCA cables from the amp before you disconnect the amp & cap grounds, ground the amp and cap to their own secure ground, then plug the RCA's back in and hook the battery ground back up, this
may take care of the noise. 3' of ground is too much, and I personally do not like running the amps ground on a capacitor.GRIN

are the rca's and pwr ran down the same side?

sounds on 04/10/2005 22:07:58
the power is on one side and the rca and remote is on the other. well the rca hasn't been hidden in the trim yet, but will be soon.

I'll cut the ground short and ground the cap and the amp seperately sometimes tomorrow when I have the time.

Thanks for the help, I'll post an update when I fix the ground.
