i hope someone can help me.  I have just installed an amplifier into my car which was working for about 3 days but has now stopped working and no sound is coming out of the back speakers.

It is a Sony XM-502Z amplifier connect to two 6x9s. I have it connected to a Sony M800 head unit. i have run the power cable from my battery directly to the amplifier and the remote cable from the back of the stereo plus an earth running from the amplifier to some metal on the chassis.

It was working for a few days and then it would cut out for a bit then start working again. now it has completly stopped working and the power light on the amplifier does not light up.

i hope you can help me in solving my problem was wondering whether it is a fault with the product.

thanks

First of all make sure your ground wire is secure to bare metal.

Also if you have access to a 12v test light or multimeter check to see if you remote wire is getting 12v through it (make sure HU is turned on when doing this).
If it doesnt have 12v going to it check the fuse on the remote wire behind the radio to make sure it didnt blow.

Finally do you have a fuse hooked up to your power wire(batt. to amp)?

Also does your car come with a factory sound system package(with factory amp)?

To the Golds: If theres a factory amp and if he didnt bypass it correctly could this be the problem?

Hummm, was working but would shut off, come back on and now dead? That sounds like a bad thing. As Ryan said, check all wiring from HU to amp. (Power, Gnd, RCA signals and Rem) Also, check the fuse in back of this amp and power lead for voltage between + amp lug and ground and Rem to ground w/ HU on.

This is a pretty modest power amp. (50 x 2 Wrms @ 4 ohms) Are the rear speakers stock or aftermarket? Most stock speakers may not handle that much power for long before they blow. If the speakers blow, they can cause an open circuit or a short. The shorting will often cause the amp to go into protect or blow a fuse. Check you speakers back there, to see if they still work. If yes, amp problems.

Also, may want to remove amp and have it looked at by a qualified tech. A few simple bench tests will tell if amp is still working or not. Is this amp still under warranty?

Comments?

I have installed almost 30 of those sony 502's in last 5 months, after sony discontinued the 222 model and introduced this one,

With proper installation i have not had a single customer come back to me to report any kind of problem with that amp, it rated at 50 x 2 but when bench tested it put out 43.9 wrms @ 14.4V at 4ohms per channel, a modest amp for low budget upgrades.

Definitely either there is an installation error or a company defect in that particular model.

Sony is not so good at customer support, but if its in warranty you should definitely write to them about it, Also sony is very stubborn with replacements, if it was not installed by an authorised installer they may create problems regarding replacement. Atleast in India they do.

thanks for your help so far.....

they are sony 6x9 i think 180w speakers so they should handle the amp right?

the fuse in the amp and power cable are all fine i checked them.

also i forgot to mention that if i disconnected the amp for a couple of days or so it would start working again for a short while when reconnected. then slowly stop and start working then go dead again.

i am going to try all those things over the weekend and let you know how i get on in due course.

cheers

gain settings... check them...Gain shud be set at the HU output voltage..

seems the amp is over heating and going in protection mode.

where have u installed the amp..?? is it in a place where there is low air circulation..??

Amps produce good amount of heat.. if there is no proper air circulation around it then there are chances of over heating.. they shuld always be installed in a place where heat dissipation is possible..
