To any one really but specifically i was told Uochronos i have a first gen. (91) talon turbo and i need a bigger ALT but i can't find anything except stinger and i don't really want to have to go that route so if anyone can help i'll listen Replies (12) lessismorespl on 04/5/2005 21:33:47 Here is what I did, although Stinger, HO, and Ohio all make excellent alts, they are way over priced. I went to a local starter/alt shop and had one built, it was $230.00 O.T.D. for a 170 amp/90 amp idle alt for my car. When I had my SL2 Saturn, the same place charged me $180.00 O.T.D. for a 160 amp/80 amp idle. I really like dealing w/ local places, it is so much easier to get warranty work done. I'm sure you can do all the wire upgrades yourself, I had just did a Big 3 on my car before I bought the alt. It is fairly easy, but if you look around, you can find a good respectable shop to build one. swez on 04/6/2005 10:41:55 Found a 135A that will drop in your present mounts: $199.00 http://verizonsupersite.com/4alterstartcom/pages/store/skudetail.nhtml?profile=highoutputalternators&uid=10634&returnURL=http%3A//verizonsupersite.com/4alterstartcom/pages/common/sitesearch.nhtml%3Fquery%3D1991%20Eagle%20Talon&catuid=10013 Swez swez on 04/6/2005 10:50:57 This is a good thing to read.... talks about ALT/BAT configurations needed for high output audio systems. Very interesting how much the BAT and ALT must work as a system. http://www.zena.net/htdocs/alternators/AutoSound.shtml Swez alanjlamore on 04/6/2005 10:59:00 Hey, could someone refresh my memory about finding how many amps are left over for your radio? I know I've been told before (a long time ago) and I think someone asked about this recently, but I can't find it. I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota and I can't find what kind of alt I have, but I'll call dodge again and ask them. The most power going to my sterio I ever had was a class AB 4 ch. 75w rms amp running 4 speakers, and a class D 500w rms amp running 2 subs as 2 ohms for a total of 800w rms, but 300 of that is with a class AB amp. With this setup, my lights dimmed a little when the volume was high but a 1Farad cap "fixed" that. (I'm too cheap for the electrical upgrades) Now I'm only running front speakers that can take 90W rms and I'm using 2 channels of a class T amp that is rated at 125W rms per ch. and I've been planning on running 2 Infinity subs that take 700W rms (together), and the amp (class D) I was looking at puts out around 900 (but I'll adjust the gain accordingly). So I'm guessing 880-1000W rms but all with class T and D amps. I'm starting to think I might go with just one of the subs and sell the other one, but the problem is that they are 4 ohm SVC and I'd still have to buy a more expensive amp, unless I sell both and buy one DVC sub...I think that would be better and cheaper. Just curious if what I've been thinking about doing would be too much on my charging system. I know if was close when I had the old setup, but now I'll have a class T amp and a class D amp so I was hoping that would help. Thanks, Victor on 04/6/2005 11:17:03 Hey swez... that is some real good info, worth bookmarking that page... Thanks.. Victor... TalonTSI91 on 04/8/2005 12:22:34 Hey thanks alot swez and all you guys yea i didn't want to go with a real expensive ALT money is tight and its hard just getting the stereo stuff let alone all the upgrades swez on 04/8/2005 14:16:52 Think closely about what Less said about a local shop to supply your needs. They can probably meet your price range if you press the issue and they want your business. Also, a warranty backup is nice to have at a local shop. It's a "real pain" to get warrantee repairs from out of town suppliers. BTDT All you lose is S/H, time waiting for the unit to come back and adnausium. Beleive me, I have been down that path before... better to find a local source if they can do as you require. A few lousy bucks more now, can save many lousy bucks/time later. Swez TalonTSI91 on 04/8/2005 14:23:59 Ok but i'm not sure if there is any place around here i might have to go out looking because there really isn't much of anything usefull around here LOL but i can check maybe if i go to a place like harrisburg or something I'm from P.A. about an hour from harrisburg and an hour from williamsport they might have a place that can help me out montego_27 on 04/8/2005 16:54:05 Hey Talon, hows this? Good luck and be on your toes when you call around. Swez lessismorespl on 04/9/2005 08:28:01 Yes, some alternator shops will over charge if they know it is for car audio, be very discreet in what info you give them. I called 3 places in my area, the one I chose was fairly priced, plus I asked around other audio shops for people that may have done business w/ them, nothing like a another audiophiles opinion...right? Just to make sure, kind of an experiment so-to-speak, I called around to the same 3 shops and told them I was running some audio equipment and wanted to up my amperage w/ a HO alt, 2 out of the 3 shops gave me different pricing, like $100-$120 higher for the same exact alt. as for the shop I decided to go w/ gave me the exact same price, in most cases a respectable alt shop will charge you $175-$250 for an 170-200 amp alt. Another thing to check into is what the alt will put out on idle, mine puts out 80 on idle. Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
