I was cleanin out my car today and decided to open my trunk to look at my sub ( 12" Brahama Mark ll) I turned it up to listen to it and i can hear a rattle that i never heard before. The sub wasnt distorting cuz i usually play my music at volume 26 (which is the max for me) and i noticed at 24-26 it made a rattling noise. I assume its the dustcap ( hoping it is) thats making the noise. I ran my finger around the dust cap but i didnt feel anything loose. Its a very noticable noise like if i would be inside my car and hear a part of my car rattle. But it still sounds and plays great so thats why i believe its the dust cap. What do you guys think it could be? Replies (11) swez on 04/3/2005 16:16:54 There are a number of factors to look at here. The best thing you can do, is to isolate the noise (rattles) by pulling the sub box out of the car and listen to it closely in an open area. If you use a small piece of flexible tubing (1/2" dia, 2 -3 feet long) and put one end closr to your ear, and the other end as a probe for noises, that will help isolate whether it is the sub, the box, some loose hardware etc. Once you have isolated the noise, then we can help you figure out what to do about it. Is that sub still under warrantee? Swez ttocs on 04/3/2005 16:53:40 could be speaker wire in the box hitting the speaker as well.... MrBrownstone on 04/4/2005 12:59:43 If you unscrew the sub, and lightly shake it or if you press, decompress the cone a few times really quickly, that should tell you if you've damaged the coil. I used to get 1 or 2 out of 10 Atomic Blunder (Thunder, Shocker) subs like that right out of the box. Often times, it's usually because something is either loose, or broken off in the sub and that's not good. If it's the speaker wire, it should be easy to tell. AND at low volumes, speaker wire isn't going to move. ryan2 on 04/4/2005 16:21:33 The sub isnt under warranty anymore. I did a more extensive overview on the dustcap to see if it was coming loose. So i ave ruled that out as the problem. ANd the rattle is definatly coming from either the sub itself or something inside the box. But here is my problem. 2 of my screws are totally and i mean totally stripped. So my next question is without cutting the box apart how do i get these 2 screws out so i can remove my sub? Ive tried a screw remover which helped 2 get one out but then it made the other ones worse. The head of the screws actually are in the shape of a contact lense ( concave, convex which ever one it is). alanjlamore on 04/4/2005 16:47:01 can you get vicegrips to clamp on it? if not, you could use a drill with a bit that's a little smaller than the screw. Drill it in a little ways, then reverse the drill once you think the drill bit is holding the screw pretty good. This may take a few tries, and might ruin the drill bit. Hopefully you can get a good grip with vicegrips, and clamp down so it locks on it real tight. swez on 04/4/2005 21:02:47 Can either try drilling the head out or slide a hacksaw blade inder the sub mounting lip and cut the screw head off. Then, you can remove the sub. The old screw should come out with vicegrips. How did you manage to mangle the screw heads that badly? SMILE They don't need to be torqued to 100 ft lbs ya know. If you cannot reuse the old screw holes, adjust the sub a few degrees to make fresh screw holes when re-installing the sub. Swez SG86 on 04/5/2005 17:07:09 Ive got 2 Adire Shivas, and sometimes when i turn them up to around 25 or so, it kinda sounds like they are shaking, kinda like they reverberate too much or something ryan2 on 04/5/2005 21:07:20 Well i have a lot of stuff to tell you guys about what i've figured out today. Its alot of "how the h*ll did i do this?" kinda of stuff. First off: how did i mess up the screw heads? Cheap screws, stripped sum screwin in sub, and then to remove tried a screw remover which ur supposed to use very slow speed(i only have 1 speed on drill fast, get the picture lol). 2nd: The rattle was from the speaker wire 3rd: I had my sub wired wrong. Thought it was in series when i only had 1 VC hooked up (when i got sub it was late at night just got home from work, was excited and wired it up quick and wrong lol) When i watched my sub it wasnt moving close to 2" xmax like its supposed to now i know why And you guys said it compared to the 12" W7 and i was like no it just barely keeps up with my friends 10" W7. But now i wired it correctly in series for a 4ohm load in its 2cuft ported box tuned to 30hz. With 400wRMS going to it now with both VC working all i can say is WOW. BIG difference. ryan2 on 04/5/2005 21:09:25 SG are they both tight up against the box? Also if you look at them are they moving in sync with each other? SG86 on 04/6/2005 15:11:21 yea, theya re both tight against the box and they seem to be moving in sync with eachother. someone told me it might sound off cuz ive been listening to the radio lately ( cd player doesnt play cds, about to get a new one today maybe!) and that the radio doesnt get as good bass or something, think that oculd be it? ryan2 on 04/6/2005 22:59:35 Thats right that the radio doesnt have the best SQ so it wont get as loud as a cd, but your subs should sound fine still with out making any noises that there not supposed to. So that isnt the problem. Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
