is the panasonic CQ-C8301U head unit any good for that price or would you recommend something else

Panasonic makes very good HU's. I personally like the MXE line. I have ran Panasonic for over 2 years now, I owned the MXE 883U and just recently upgraded to the MXE 8400, I'm not sure what you are paying for the deck, but I do know Panasonic makes excellent decks. email me if you want to run some price comparisons vs specs on various models by several manufacturers.
