Hey, I got my new sup/amp installed a few days ago, Alpine MRD-M301 Amp, and Infinity Kappa Perfect 12.1D sub. Amp is 350Wrms at 14.4V, but my car only gives up 12-13V, so the 350Wrms sub is being slightly underpowered from the amp. But just recently (today) I noticed that the sub is getting a little distorted. You can hear it really well when it is not very loud, and can also hear it pretty good from up close when it is turned up all the way. It sounds like the sub is blown (or is working on getting there) but my amp cant even power it past the RMS. Also, when it is turned up really loud (it still distorts the normal way) but I can hear the cone rattling. I noticed that i can even hear something rattle when just push lightly against the cone (when its off) The box I made is 3/4in MDF, caulked all around the inside, and around where the sub is mounted, and the wire terminal, and I've got polyfill all along the inside. I was using the sub with the low pass filter and the subsonic freq filter, built into the amp, both turned on (20-100hz) I've got a good ground set up, the Power and RCA wires are coming from opposite sides of the car. Ok, something is definentally wrong with that sub, I just tried it on a different amp and it still sounded terrible. I dont know what happened to it, I was running it at below RMS with a LPF and a subsonic freq filter, but somethings wrong. Should I box the thing back up and send it back and ask for a replacement? Replies (9) trunkisloud on 03/31/2005 19:16:30 yea sounds like a bad sub....i bought 61/2 infinity kappas before brand new and one was already blown when i got it compvr15s on 04/1/2005 16:50:02 try pushing in on the sub which no amp hooked to it or anything, it should kinda be hard to push, if it pushes in really easy, your box is leaking air, dont push to far, you will know as soon as you start to push it, if it moves really freely there is a leak, that may be causing some of the sound... also remove the sub if that doesnt occur, and see if the cone has seperated... have you tried to lightly hold the cone while sub is playing,if sound is gone then your cone prolly seperated.... good luck, or may just have got a bad sub, send it back for new one/ Needasystem on 04/2/2005 05:52:22 Yea, no air is leaking out of that sub, I have everything caulked in there really really well, and it is going to be a real pain to get that sub out of the enclosure I built in order to send it back. Its the middle of the night right now, so i'll have to try that last thing later, and I'll tell you how it sounds. swez on 04/2/2005 07:18:55 It does sound like the sub is on its way out. Buzzing or rattles indicate a mechanical failure in the motor structure. Probably a mfg defect. Plan on pulling the sub out and return for a new one. Is this a ported or sealed box? How many cf internal and if ported, what is the tuning freq? Swez Needasystem on 04/2/2005 17:38:30 Sealed, 1.0 cf. I'm pissed though, I havent called them yet, but it says on their site that if there are any physical defects w/the sub then they wont take it back, and I accidentally put a dent in the cone. *grumble* swez on 04/2/2005 20:29:21 I think I would play a different card here.... the dent in cone is not the issue. The sub failure at rated power is. Either way, the sub will need to be refurbed. That means dissasembled, new parts installed and then re-assembled. Either way ya slice it, this sub was either defective to begin with or abused. Swez lessismorespl on 04/2/2005 23:42:28 I never liked Infinity subs, I had 2 12" Perfects that I ran @ rated power and they popped, I had set the gains w/ a multimeter, and broke the subs in w/ well over 20 hours of low volume, low power play time, they blew about 2 months later, Infinity gave me all kinds of headaches and hassles over taking the subs back, then when I did send them back, they sent me a pair of the entry level subs, so I sent them back and it took almost 4 weeks to finally send me the right subs, I just sold them b/c I had already bought a better pair of subs b/c I was tired of waiting. Some people may not agree w/ me on this, but I feel customer service is an important factor when deciding on a manufacturer, if the customer service is not there, what good is the product to you if you have all kinds of problems w/ it. When I was trying to build a ported enclosure for the sub, I called them, the tech told me to look in the box and use the spec sheet they supply, which also upset me, I mean, how did he know what sound I was looking for, how did he know what kind of vehicle I had, etc...really not impressed at all w/ anything by Infinity. Needasystem on 04/3/2005 04:28:00 I think I will see if the subs are under warranty from infinity first (I bought them on ebay, so I'm not sure how all that stuff works) lessismorespl on 04/3/2005 08:48:28 http://www.installer.com/tech/buying.html This will give you some insight on what to watch for when buying online. I do not discouragfe buying on eBay or any other online store, you just have to be very careful. In most cases the manufacturer will not cover the product. I purchase some items on eBay myself, I seldom buy amps, speakers/subs, or head units though b/c I like to have a warranty if something goes wrong. Infinity will not cover those subs if the serieal numbers have been altered. Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
