D-mat and other sound dampening materials work very well to stop panel rattles. They also seal the trunk or cabin against outside road noise and keep your bass inside the vehicle. Very effective at doing both and one can anticipate several dB more bass when installed properly.

Other materials out there, work equally well and are cheaper as well. E-dead, B-Quiet, Brown bread and a few others will do just fine. Just follow the instructions that come with the material. You can find many of these off E-bay at much lower cost. Use a google search to find out more.

It keeps road noise out and bass in, so they may not be able to hear you coming, but when you open your doors they will know you are there. Dollar for Dollar, I think Fatmat is best for the money, 100 sq ft for about $130 shipped. B-Quiet Extreme and B-Quiet Ultimate are probably the best on the market, somewhat higher than Fatmat, but much cheaper than Dynamat Extreme, about $85 + S&H for 50 sq ft of the B-Q Extreme and $129 for 50 sq ft of the Ultimate, not a bad deal considering Dynamat is $170-$240 for 36 sq ft. If you are on a budget, the eDead V1 and the eDead V1SE are both very reasonable, you can buy it direct from Elemental Designs for $1/ sq ft, the SE is $1.50/sq ft. Personally, I swear by sound dampening a vehicle, you get much better bass response inside your vehicle, your speakers sound better, and you do not have that annoying rattle and clang @ red lights!

Jeez, I would have included all the URLs, but there is no HTML on these post, also, I was afraid I'd get accused of spamming, but since yu want to get sarcastic, here is where yu can buy these products and the prices are accurate pending 03/28/05. Here are respectable places online you can buy sound dampening:
http://www.fatmat.com They offer a variety of kits, door kits, trunk kits, speaker kits, etc... they also have 2 bulk packs, one of which is 36 sq ft and the other is 100 sq ft they also include roller, knife, and surface degreaser in the package. The 100 sq ft is $99.99. You can also buy it from an eBay store called "sondsdead", he offers 50 and 100 sq ft packs which also include the roller and knife, not sure if he includes the degreaser or not since I have only purchased it direct from Fatmat.
B-Quiet can be purchased from http://www.b-quiet.com/extremeinstallation.html
They offer B-quiet Extreme which is $84.99 for 50 sq ft and B-quiet Ultimate, which is $129.99 for 50 sq ft, Brown Bread is no longer available since they replaced it w/ B-Quiet Ultimate, it cans till be purchased on ebay though.
eDead V1 and eDead V1SE can be purchased on eBay, but I prefer to deal direct w/ Elemental Designs http://www.edesignaudio.com
they sell it in 10 sq ft - 60 sq ft packages the eDead V1 is $1 per sq ft, and the eDead V1SE is $1.50 per sq ft. They have very fast shipping, I have used over 500 sq ft of the V1 and over 200 sq ft of the V1SE, the V1SE is much better than the V1, both do the job though.
I have used all of the above on at least 5 installs, most audiophiles prefer the B-Quiet over the Dynamat not only b/c of cost, but b/c it is simply the best I have used. All work well and are much cheaper than Dynamat Extreme.

Stop Watching 'Good Times' Reruns. DYNOMIIIITE!!!!!!!!

Woops, sorry, misread the title of the thread.

In response to all the rattles, squeaks, etc. basically, this occurs because your car is made out of many different materials all wedged, glued, pinned, bolted, screwed, welded and snapped together. All of these change composition due to the dynamic of the road, bumps, aging, etc. In any case, there are a couple of easy ways to eliminate some of the noises without spending a lot of money.

Squeaks & rattles:

Basically, these occur because of a space that has developed between 2 materials that were adhered, and the materials either wore away or changed due to weather (like dried out weatherstripping or plastic dash parts. To get rid of these, you can take apart the part that squeaks, then put either velcro or clear silicone calking in the space, then put them back together.

Flexing due to Sub Bass:

Dynamat, Fatmat, cow dung, they are ALL the same. Basically, they add mass to the body panels to stop them from shaking. This is NOT dissimilar to putting your hand on the trunklid to keep it from rattling. Basically ANYTHING that you put on the body panels to add mass will do about the same thing as that overpriced mat material.

I completely agree with you Mr.B ...

These mats sell like this..

"Wow It must be something really great, look at its high prices, I guess it will really make my system roar like a lion, Someday when i have enuf money i am definitely going to buy it" .... hehe..

Many times high priced stuff seems to be more impressive just because of their prices.

This is the technique which many manufacturers use to bring up their name and sell..

I actually had a guy install mud on the trunk lid. It worked, but obviously, when it dried, it started to come off randomly.

Just goes to show you that marketing will sell anything,...even if it's useless.

Look at the whole 5 year debate on Large Farad+ sized capacitors. $100k's were spend on that one.

Any suggestions on home-made material that could be used in place of this stuff (and hold up for a while)?

Even if it has a shorter life span (a little longer than mud though), it could be worth it if it's a lot cheaper, plus people like working on their systems so changing out whatever material they used would give them something to do...

What about some spray on foamy stuff that's used for insulation (don't know if this is actually cheap or not),

Or bubble wrap and duct tape???? or just lots of tape, taped over it's self????

Actually, in one of my earlier systems, I used the spray on bedliner they sell everywhere(Autozone, Pep Boys, Adavanced Auto, etc..), it runs about $3-$4 a can and i did the whole trunk, rear deck, floor boards, and doors w/ about 12 cans, less than $40, and it worked great. This time around, I used eDead which cost me about $60, but I have bigger car now. I do not agree w/ most of the high priced sound dampening. Dynomat is notorious for being way over priced. If you do not care about smell, bed liner works great and is very inexspensive, some silicone caulk on the licesne plate, just a small bead on the corners works good for that. Another cheap alternative is Peel N Seal, it is an adhesive roofing material that is about 1/4" thick, it smells like tar but it sticks like glue and is very strong, that is only like $45 for 100 sq ft.
