this was brought up in another thread and just seems like a fun topic hehe

I like beer in general but these have to be my favorites in no particular order

Terminator Stout
Dead Guy Ale by Rogue River Breweries
Henry Weinhards Northwest Trails
Henry Weinhards Blue Boar
Guiness Draught
Arrogant Bastard Ale
Milk Stout(Forget who makes it)
Henry Weinhards Private reserve
Hammer Head Ale

I like full and strong ales and stouts mainly but i have yet to find a beer i really dislike... i think of it as the poor mans wine hehe... although some of these micro brews get spendy

i have always wanted to try guiness. is it any good? im used to the usual bud light. bushe light, how does it compare to those types of beer

Crum on 03/25/2005 08:43:03
Compvr15s - Guiness is to Bud Light as football is to jazzercize. Guiness will help open you eyes to another beer world.

As for my favorites . . .

homebrew
Harpoon's
Dogfish IPA
Red Seal
Left Hand Milk Stout
Beamish

But don't take me for a beer snob - I love the buttery taste of a Pabst Blue Ribbon or the sting of a Schlitz, too.

i see they have guiness in a can, is that anything like the draft in the bar? i try not to goto the bar much, turned 21 a few months ago and still get my beer muscles and think im super man, so i havent had a chance to try many different beers. i do kinda like heineken, but thats as far away from bud light as i get. the dark color just kinda makes me leary

Have tried many a beer in my day and found the stouts and strong ales to rank high on taste and potency. Most American common beers (Bud, Mulehair, Rolling Rock, Coors, Old Mulewacky etc.) lack the body and taste of many fine imports. Although Micholob Dark, Black and Tan and Bocks are actually pretty good.

Sam Adams (several brews I like)
Guiness Stout
India Pale Ale
Fosters Ale
St. Pauly Girl
Corona (w/ lime)
Molsen Export
Black & Tan

There are more I have forgotten... may add them later. Liked several of the Micro-brew offerings as well. Especially the Old Plank Road Pub in Milwaukee, WI. Some fine beers there.

hehe i like that analogy Crum " guiness is to bud light what football is to jazzersize"

Comp VR is you have never had a good dark beer guiness might not be the best choice hehe start with something like a dark ale. Stout is very over powering if you have only had bud and pabst etc before. infact the other day i had a couple stouts then my buddy got a pitcher of pabst it tasted like i was drinking stright water after the stout hehe..

out of the can though isnt as good as out of the keg... when i drink guiness from the can or bottle i like the "drought" not 100% sure what the differnce is but i like it better if i'm getting it from bottle or can.

also no not sure how far east these beers get but if any of you guys have "rogue river brewery" beers in your area they are some great beer from stout and dark ale to IPA's... yet to find a bad one.

oh i have so many favorites i couldn't possibly list them all, alexander keiths beer is most excellent same with rickards red and nelson wild honey actually anything from nelson brewery is great. those are the beers i only get when i can afford though, otherwise i usually drink either molson canadian or budweiser, and if i am really broke and desperate i force mountain crest down my throat, its not as aweful as other "budget" beers but it still sucks. i do have a question for you hosers down there in the states though, why is like 90% of your beer light? light beer is like wiping before you poop there just isn't any point. does the majority of you actually like light beer? it seems so weak compared to proper canadian beer too even the budweiser just isn't the same i dunno perhaps we all just prefer our own

Ok I gotta back up oldmazda! He's obviously a fellow Canadian like I am.

Some great Canadian Beers (real beer, not watered down light ones)
Alexander Keiths
Moosehead
Steelback
Rickards Red
MGD (hate to say it but it is one damn good beer too)
and I guess for everyday drinking I'd also have to say Labbatt Blue

For the "Budget Beer" Lucky Lager and Boeheimen two decend ones too.

I have to agree with the Canadians here about many "Lite" beers. They have no taste, pack no punch and basically only good for folks who are trying to cut calories, but still want to drink psudo-beer. Can't stand any of them. Won't buy any of them and don't need to count calories either.

Hey bros to the Great White North... there is/was a Canadian Beer my Dad used to buy when we went fishing walleye fishing in Lake St. Clare off Stoney Point. It was a dark beer, >7% alcohol content and had a very robust flavor too. Anyone know the name of same? Hummm, think it was Molson XXX? Does that sound right?

To Old Mazda, some of this is history, some is my own theory. . .

During the 1920's and '30s, the good ole USA decided to make alcohol illegal. Essentially all of the brewers in America went bankrupt and had to find other means to make a living. When the Prohibition was repealed, we were in the midst of the Great Depression - no one had the capital to start a brewery. In the 40's, all of the men went to war in Europe and Asia, but we started making money again. The few brewers around had to appeal to the majority, which at the time were women. The pilsner styled beer took off.

Also, thanks to the industrial revolution, we learned to add adjuncts to our beer to make them more inexpensive. In other countries, beer continued to be made with the same ole basic four ingredients - water, hops, barley, and yeast. We, however, began adding rice, corn, . . .

Of course, when fishing, a nice swilly american beer is excellent. But if I'm relaxing an only plan on drinking a couple beers, it's best to stay away from the biproducts of St Louis, Milwaukee, and the Rockies.

Ya i have to agree with canadians too 90% of beers in the US that are from large breweries arnt great. i pretty much stick to the microbrews and specialty beers.

but when i'm too poor for 3$+ a bottle i usualy buy these... my list of cheap beer hehe..

Pabst Blue Ribbon(PBR) cheap yet tastes pretty damn good
MGD
budwieser
Coors.

although i'm with you canadians about the whole light thing i dont get that either you have to drink way more to get as drunk meaning you consume just as many calories..

Hey Chronos,

You can probably get several great tasting Canadian Beers where you are for reasonable prices. I buy Mosen Ice, LaBatts and a few others in 40 Oz jumbos for under $3.00 USD.

We have high taxes here in MI on adult beverages, smokes and such, so you may find them cheaper in your area as well. As a last resort, will buy Bud Ice... but it's whimpy in taste, compared to most Canadian Beers.

Tego lives in Tax-achesettes. I live in Micha-taxes-screwsya

Ready to move to warmer climate anyday!

hehehe great theory though i still think i like this one better :D

http://www.sotallytober.com/funnies/buffalotheory.php

chronos you got it right buddy, there is absolutely no point to light beer i don't think anyways, even if you don't plan on having enough to create the balance of calories why would anyone sacrifice the taste of a beer to spare themselves of a few calories. it defeats the pupose of sitting back and relaxing with a beer in your hand if you have to worry about the number of calories are in whatever it is your drinking. if your not drinking beer for the flavour or the alchohol content then why drink it? hehehe thats just what i think anyways. also i forgot to add one of my older favorites which would be kokanee, its gone down in quality recently but its still one of the better lagers.

uochronos on 03/27/2005 12:22:42
oh wow i forgot all about kokanee that is a damn fine lager.... actualy had it for the first time on my way to canada last year lol..

ya i dont know why beer is so expensive here really 3$ swez for a 40oz is a killer deal my current favorite is Rouge River breweries Dead Guy Ale and a 24oz bottle costs 4.49$

the real problem here in oregon is they are trying to turn us into Utah they are in the process of making it so anything with more then 5% alcahol well only be sold in liqour stores which all close between 8-10.. already they are working on puting all the malt liqoure mike's, skyy, old E, etc... that most grocery stores carry into liqour stores. next they attack my beer it well be a sad day...
