which CD player to attach to factory HU?

Hi Friends,
Thanks to help from you guys, I was able to remove the plastic trim and bolts holding the factory-fitted cassette player on my 1999 Toyota Camry CE. The idea was to see what all sockets/controls it has on the backside.

Now, I want to buy a CD mp3 player that i can "attach" to this toyota cassette head unit. This head unit is supposed to be CD player ready, i.e., in the front I can choose the source to be AM, FM, Tape or CD. There are other controls too like previous next so far as I can make it out, I should be able to attach a player to it.

There is an empty socket at the back which is where I believe I will have to connect a CD player, correct? The idea is to retain this head unit so that I get to play cassette. Since the space is for 2 DIN sized player, I want to install a CD player in the Dash and no fancy CD changers.

Can I do this? If yes, what model would you advise? I browsed, but can't figure out from specs if a particular CD in-dash head unit will be able to connect to current player. Any pointers?

Thanks,
Gaurav

you can't really hook up anything but a factory toyota cd player to a factory toyota deck, and retain the controls. you have two options:

1) buy an aftermarket CD/MP3/Tape player combo. there are many double-din units on the market that would fit PERFECT in yolur fash. it would almost look like it was supposed to be there.

2) (please don't do this) install any aftermarket radio, and run your factory tape deck through an FM modulator to play on your aftermarket cd player. doable, but bootsy.

3 you could always buy a toyota aftermarket cd player, but you can't play MP3 cds.

what do you think?? i'd buy the double din. your factory speakers will sound much better.

Hi UK,
Thanks so much for explaining it so concisely. I would either go for a
double DIN or just a mp3 player. But I did find a USA SPEC T107MP3
player which claims to be factory compatible for Toyota.

Any views on it? Its more expensive than my budget of $125 :-(
And any recommendations on a CD.mp3 head unit that fits my budget?
Thanks!!

very interesting. i've never seen an aftermarket radio that lets you keep the factory tape deck. you'll need some sort of t-harness to split power and speaker wires to both units.

you sure you want to keep the tape deck??
