2V vs. 4V preouts...

Hey guys,

I was all ready to buy an Alpine 9831 HU about a month ago but then I found out there was new stuff coming out in the spring. The new Alpine model that is replacinng the old one is the 9853. I have found each of them for the same price ($349.99 CDN).

I was about to jump all over the new model except for one thing. It only has 2volt preouts, whereas the old one had 4v. I don't know why Alpine would lower its preout voltage on the third best model, 4v doesnt show up until the next one up.

So which one would you guys go for the 2v preout or 4v preout one? Is going from 2v to 4v really a big difference?

Sorry the long post,
Thanks in advance,
Jay

Hey Jay,
If you still want the new model take a look @ this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=79841&item=5762448545&rd=1

I've had many systems in my vehicles for over 25 yrs now and I just got one of these about 4 months ago.Probably the best single item I''ve ever added to a system. My Pioneer HU was only putting out 2.2v, (and running mutiple amps) the only drawback to a unit I was very happy with.I spent $60 bucks on this and It not only solved that problem but look what else it can do.I compared this to the AudioControl (who make outstanding equipment) $180 unit and it matched up pretty well.I've turned a buddy of mine on to this and everytime I see him he thanks me for it.Check out the features on it and if you have any questions my e-mail is ogetnom27@yahoo.com Yahoo IM name is ogetnom27 Good luck, Tego

Thanks montego for the suggestion. I have made up my mind one of the two Alpine's I have mentions above for cosmetic and sound quality reasons. Also for the option to intergrate my iPOD and be able to have FULL control from the HU is an amazing feature. It will even charge my iPOD with the special Alpine adapter.

So same question still which of the two would you guys buy the old model 9831 or new 9853. If it wasnt for the 2v preouts on the new one I be getting that, just want to see what you guys would do in my situation.

Thanks,
Jay

LC1,

Most newer amps have no trouble managing a 2 volt signal. Most amps can make full output with as little as 0.5 volts. It's all in the setup you use.

However, after the install of you fav HU is complete and you find that you want/need more voltage to amps, then a line driver is an appropriate choice. The one mentioned by Tego, has an 8 volt output, 5 band parametric EQ and an AUX input port as well. Can be used for DVD, MP3, I-pod etc.

In short, pick the HU you like best and go from there. If more HU voltage is needed to drive outboar amps, you have options.
