Puzzling Math....!!!!!!!!!

Long ago, a clever mathematician used to cheat people. Once he borrowed
Rs.4000/- from a rich man. After a few days, he borrowed Rs.2000/- from
the same man. Many days passed, the mathematician did not return the
money to the rich man. The rich man went to the mathematician and asked
to return the money. But to his great surprise, the mathematician
replied that there is no need to pay the debt.

"See here, friend" said the mathematician " the sum of 4000 and 2000 is
equal to zero, so I do not have any balance to pay".

The rich man took the matter to the court. When the judge came to know
this, he was astonished. He asked the mathematician to prove that sum
of 4000 and 2000 is zero, and not 6000.

The Clever mathematician agreed. He said:

let a = 4000, b = 2000 and c = 6000

a + b = c

Multiply both sides by a + b

(a + b) (a + b) = c (a + b)

a*a + ab + ab + b*b = ca + cb

a*a + ab - ca = cb - b*b - ab

a( a + b -c) = -b(a + b - c)

so a = - b

a + b = 0

Hence by putting the values of "a" and "b" as 4000 and 2000
respectively, their sum is zero, so the mathematician saw no need to
pay any money
to the rich man.

The above calculation has no doubt surprised you as it did the judge.

I'd call that white collar crime of the highest order. It just goes to prove one need not be poor to be duped and one need not be rich to be take advantage of. That's usually how the rich get richer ... off the backs of the poorer sect.

PS However, a honest man pays his debts with interest or services of equal value. The Rich man should have hire the mathmatician to do his books.

Does anyone want to know why this works? If not I won't spoil it, but there is a reason. At least I'm pretty sure. Post it if you want the solution.

From my vantage point, if a bank loans a guy 4000 whatever currency, then gave him 2000 more, they'd expect a 6000 return plus some interest. He would sign a contract, agreeing to pay back the stated amount with a specified interest rate.

If he did not do so, he would be hauled into court, hounded by collection agencies and perhaps have a personal visit from 2 big guys named Vinnie and Bubba to "encourage" the guy to pay his debts.

My Dad always said... "Son, figures don't lie, but liars can figure" Know the difference? Who care what mathmaticians do with their spare time? Put that brain power to work, solving real issues like rising fuel costs, budget crunches and ways to feed starving people around the world.

When you're factoring out from a polynomial, you are finding the possible answers. The answers you come up with have to fit into the original problem, which this answer doesn't.

You have the given a=4000, then a possible answer a=-b, but 4000 does not equal -2000. That possible answer does not work and would be thrown away.

I think the answers that you get when factoring a polynomial, that don't work in the original equation, have something to do with the imaginary number line. It's been a while since my pre-calc courses with all that algebra, so I don't remember exactly.

a*a + ab + ab + b*b = ca + cb

It's OK til you try to divide a polynomial here:

a( a + b -c) = -b(a + b - c)
