Any amps on the market that compare to JBL bp600.1

Hey guys, it's been a while!
I'm still looking for an amp for my 2 SVC 350Wrms Infinity kappa perfect subs.

I've been looking to get the JBL bp600.1 amp, but they are hard to find, even on ebay.

I'm looking for something, used or not, around 600-800 watts rms that has a good price along with good quality (like the JBL).

It seems like the newer JBL amps are a LOT more expensive than the BP series.

Any ideas? Any ebay suggestions?

Thanks!

check the for sale section on carsound.com. There are some great deals on there and you can post a WTB(want to buy) topic as well. It is not a bad forum but there is ALOT of VERY fragile attitudes on there, a little too much like a soap opera.....

What about the Audiobahn A8000T? I don't have any experience with this brand, so I don't know what the quality of this amp is.

Looks good for under $200.00, and my subs are rated to take 350w rms each, so an 800w rms amp would be great.

What do you think?

Here are the specs:

Have you looked at Alpine lately? I have been researching and recommending them as well. Inputs from buyers has been very positive.

Since you have a need for 2 ohm output, consider the Alpine MRD-M501 Mono Amp. Great features here and a solid product. Shopping it well should net a price near $250.00.

Specs: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-R3Jx8yacEMp/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=130&I=500MRDM501

Not a great price here, but a google search will show better prices or e-bay as well.

Is the Audiobahn amp a lower end amp? I remember you saying that Alpine was going to be coming out with some real good amps.

I don' t understand how the Audiobahn is going for $145.00 plus $24.00 for shipping with 800w rms at 12.5 volts on ebay, and the Alpine is going for $250 + for only 550w rms at 14.4 volts??

Is Audiobahn that cheap (quality), or is Alpine that much better in quality?

I only found one of that Alpine amp on ebay, so they might have more cheaper in the near future, but unless I'm missing something, that A8000T amp is looking pretty good, although I don't understand why it would have a high pass filter on it.

Thanks for the responses!

Alan,

I am not bashing Bahn, nor do I favor that brand either. The fact it is a 2 channel, Class A/B amp (full range) makes me ask that you look deeper. The current consumption on the Bahn amp will be notably higher then a Class D amp of similar power ratings.

FYI:
Class A/B amps are ~55-60% efficient
Class D & T amps are ~85-90% efficient

Knowing that JBL 600.1's are about as rare as hen's teeth now, have been looking for similar products that will perform well and still be found at reasonable prices. So far, the closest I have found in performance and price to them, are the Alpine mono amps. Better features, well designed, durable and dependable are the things I look at, along with price.

Other amps to consider of high quality, performance and value are HiFonics, Phoenix Gold, MA Audio and Orion. All have Class D amps in the power range you desire, easy to find and can be had for reasonable prices too.

Take stock of your entire audio system VS the power plant to run them. If you have a 2/4 channel amp for your mid/highs now (or pending), adding a sub amp that draws >60A of current will really stress your electricals. Not sure what the stock ALT/BAT is for a Dakota... but if less than 120A., can be very hard on your electricals. (ALT life especially)

A final thought.... sonically, there is very minimal SPL difference between 600 and 800 Wrms. About 1.5 dB more SPL with the 800 watt amp is about all. However, the average power draw between a Class A/B amp and a Class D amp is about 30%. Use the Class D
for a sub application and a Class A/B for your full range needs.

Hope that helps, Comments?

Thanks Swez. Yea, the "Class A/B MOSFET Circuitry" and the fact that it had a high pass filter in the description had me a little confused since a lot of places that I looked online (ebay is one) said that this was a class D mono amp (ugh).

That explains a lot! No I don't want a class AB amp, I was just miss-led, and maybe deep down I wanted to believe it was a class D amp, LOL.

Thanks for the reply again. Right now I have a 4 ch. class T amp running my CDT components (only using 2 channels because one of the 4 is not working), and the third working channel is running the 2 subs at 2 ohms, giving them about 200w rms total.

I'll look more into the Alpines and this time I'll make sure the amps are Class D (or T but I think they're hard to find).

Thanks again,

swez on 03/8/2005 19:23:51
More details noted... the 8000T is in fact a Class D amp w/ 800 Wrms @ 2 ohms. I looked it up to be sure.

http://www.audiobahninc.com/frame2004.html

It will work in your application and is efficient enough to drive your subs to full capacity plus. I calculated the current draw to be slightly over 60A at full power. Cannot confirm this as I cannot find that model number on the Bahn site.

Am sure it's a decent amp and adequate power for subs mentioned. It's your call as to what you wish to do next.

i have 2 of these amps and have never had any problem with them, run for hours on high volumes and dont even get hot, build in fan is nice for amps. this is class d mono. 600 watts at 2ohms rms. same as jbl, not one ohm stable tho, good price for dependable name.

here is another 600 watt class d from phoenix gold, new line this year, can run from 1-4ohms at 600 watts. also has built in fans. looks nice, i have been researchin these amps, thinkin of gettin the 1200 watt model, for 270 this is a great deal. good luck, my two cents

I would go with alpine myself between bahn and alpine. I have not had any hands on experience with the new pg stuff personably. I worked at a shop that used to do alot of pg when the TI series was the stuff everyone wanted, and I also own limited edition pg octane. I do know of some people that were die hard pg fans until this year, and would now put them around the same class as audioboahn(again, not a baaaad product).

I was bored and was just poking around online, came up with these. Don't know if this is going to help or hinder, but here you go anyway.

I'm getting confused about this audiobahn amp. Crutchfield is saying it's a "mono sub amp", but it's also saying that it's a class AB amp????

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-nyzaVl47woy/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=130&id=features_and_specs&i=037A8000T

many other websites are calling this a class D and others are saying it's a class AB, but still call it a mono sub amp.

I think I'll look into some of the other suggestions here.

Thanks for all the responses.

alanjlamore on 03/9/2005 10:43:55
OK, I figgured out that the audiobahn amp is an AB amp, but only has one channel, hence the "mono sub amp" in the description.

I've been surfing around and found some other amps:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=18797&item=5758048858&rd=1

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=18797&item=5757930181&rd=1

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=79825&item=5757980484&rd=1

The alpine is the most expensive, and I believe they use 14.4 volts to test, but they have that digital signal processing too...
I'm not sure how they test the phoenix golds, but that seems like a very cheap price for them. I always thought of them as top of the line.
Not sure about infinity amps, I like their subs though...

Any of these that you would pick over the others??

compvr15s on 03/9/2005 15:46:57
my neighbor used to have an alpine amp, not the mono amp but he had issues with it over heating after a while, not sure if the new one has a fan or not but that my be a concern and help choosing amps, good luck

swez on 03/10/2005 10:53:26
Infinity makes some great new amps as are the new JBL series. More features than on the older models and a much higher price tag as well.

Am able to give you one on one coaching and where to get the best prices on quality products you may wish to employ. That would be an A-Z type plan and helping you to install and tweak for max performance.

If intereested, give me a private e-mail and we can discuss the matter in detail before you dive in.

Okay, I've narrowed it down a bit. Here's the side by side comparison of what I'm looking at:

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-vPyjfIVDkHl/cgi-bin/ProdComp.asp?g=130&c=3&s=0&cc=01&pt2=0&ITM158XMDS16P=on&ITM108R610A=on&ITM218OCR801=on&ITM500MRDM605=on&ITM2064KX6001=on&x=43&y=4

Which would you go with, or not go with and why??

I figgured I'd thow in that Sony amp because the RMS power was so high, even if it's underrated it might be good, but I usually don't trust Sony's amps...

All oppinions are appreciated.

Swez, I sent you an email before I looked at all of these side by side, so this would go with that email.

THANKS!!!

compvr15s on 03/11/2005 11:10:37
that alpine looks nice, as well as the infinity, id really stay away from that sony. i didnt know if there was a fan in that alpine but i guess there is, id lean more towards that amp, my neighbors really boasted good clean power to his system, i dont see a reason not to go with that amp if the price is right. i can promise you cant go wrong with the kx600 either i own two of these and they have never let me down, great lil amp with built in ss filter and decent looks, but if you can get the alpine at a better price i wouldnt hesitate to go with that. good luck

alanjlamore on 03/11/2005 11:37:25
Thanks, I like the idea of that ss filter too. They're all around the $200-$250 range with shipping on ebay and I have a bunch in my "watching" page.

I'm going to compare a bit more when I get home and have more time (at work now).

Would you guys think the signal to noise ratio is pretty important?

montego_27 on 03/11/2005 19:28:11
If you're still hot on the JBL 600.1

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=18797&item=5759638433&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

alanjlamore on 03/11/2005 19:46:56
yea, I saw that and one other one, and I have them in my "watched items" on ebay.
The other one was bid up real early, so hopefully this one doesn't get high quick (though it still isn't too bad yet).

Thanks for the link though.

alanjlamore on 03/11/2005 20:54:29
Okay, here's what I've cut my choices down to:

Infinity Reference 610a, Alpine MRD-M605, and Kicker KX600.1

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-9LHVo8XD5eK/cgi-bin/ProdComp.asp?g=130&s=0&cc=01&hidesimilar=&submit1=Click+to+Remove+Items+%3E%3E+&ITM108R610A=&ITM218OCR801=&218OCR801=on&ITM500MRDM605=&ITM2064KX6001=

Also looking at the JBL bp600.1s on ebay, but don't know if I'd take that over these new amps...

I don't know the sig to noise ratio of any of them but the infinity, the infinity puts out slightly more watage but I don't know what voltage the other amps are tested with, and the infinity takes up a lot of room.

The alpine and kicker both have fans, the alpine is slightly smaller, but about $20 more on ebay, I don't see any bass boost on the alpine (but I don't realy use that much anyway)....

The more I think about it, the more I'm thinking that the infinity can go, and I'll compare the kicker and alpine some more...

swez on 03/12/2005 04:56:58
Alan,

Keep a close eye on that JBL 600.1 as it is a solid performer and very hard to find lately. (older model line) Most you will find used or refurbished. For low prices, e-bay has a pair of them

The Alpine MRD-D501 or 605 are both fine choices. Just finished working on a project with Montego27. He is using the 301 and loves the performance and ease of use. Above average menu driven setup selections for precise tuning of your subs to car environment. The digital voltage meter is a nice diagnostic tool as well. Either of these amps can be had off e-bay for around $200.00 + S/H.

That Infinity is also a solid choice. At 2 ohms, it will net >600 Wrms and have plenty of bass as well. Infinity is a sister division of JBL, Crown and Harman Becker. This is the newest venture in 12 volt amplifiers from Infinity and most likely have gain many technical enhancements via Crown & JBL engineering. I would definitely keep this one on the list. Has 657 Wrms @ 14.4 volts @ 2 ohms and can be had off e-bay under $200.00 including S/H.

Kicker makes a solid product line as well. Seem to cater more to the SPL crowd here. Pricing on this brand seems to be held artificially high based on Brand name association, not so much on features, design specs and overall performance. Some hard shopping will be needed to find this at the price target noted earlier. E-bay is your best bet for low prices. Did see a few Buy it Now prices below $215.00

Finally, expect all amps in this power range to pull a max of 60A. Nominal current loading will be closer to 45A at normal listening levels. Make sure your electrical system is up to par for any amps in this power rating class.

Swez

I'd just like to add my support for the kicker.

I have a kx400.1 powering my 12w6v2 and I couldn't be happier. Looks nice, sounds nice.
