ok a buddy of mine had a 1200wt amp in his car then he sold it to me(and its loud!!) and now he is just going to put his 250wt kenwood back in to run his L5 10 but he has his car setup to run a bigger amp like either 2 or 4g wire and the 100wt fuses for the power and everything else and he was wondering if it would mess the little amp up by putting to much voltage to it? Or would it be good and just run it to its max potential? -Thanks- -Faded- Replies (2) uochronos on 03/7/2005 01:45:08 your alternator cant produce more then like 14.4 volts and thats pushing it usualy your car is about 13.5 volts dont matter if its 0 guage or 18guage cant pull more then what the voltage is. the amplifier will only pull what it needs no matter what wire. swez on 03/7/2005 05:18:01 He can still use the #2 wire, but may have to remove some strands to fit into the power and ground lugs in order to make it fit. Otherwise, a D-block with a #2 in and a few #4/8 gage outs is or all that is needed. Then he can run #8 wires to amp with ease. About the fuse, can leave it as is or drop to a lower value fuse. That power line fuse is there to protect the BAT/ALT for a dead short in the main power line. Finally, Chronos is right on target. The voltage output from ALT/BAT is in the range noted. The wire gage used, will dictate the amperage it can handle. The smaller the gage wire, the less current it can handle safely.
