Hey guys... how's everything going? Been busy with everything else... don't even have much time for personal things anymore. School is getting more work intensive towards the end of the quarter. I have a need for more clean (tight) low-end bass in the front of my cabin. My current speakers are 5x7 Alpine Type-S... my rears are 6x9 Alpine Type-R. The head unit I am using is Alpine's CDA-9835 (I believe it was discontinued early this year) - 26W x 4. Could you guys recommend a speaker solution for ~$100-150? Components would be great... but full-range would suffice also (if you must). If you think that I wont get what I want without an amplifier... then recommend one of those as well. Thanks again guys, I really do appreciate it. Replies (7) swez on 03/4/2005 08:41:57 What size format can you see fitting where you want the bass driver(s) in this big old boat? A pair of 6.5-8" woofers are an option. But you will need an outboard amp. Also, the Infinity Bass Link is a nice, compact bass module that drives a single 10" sub w/ a passive radiator. It is powered with a 200 watt internal amp. A little careful shopping will net prices in the range mentioned. Those 5x7's are limited in low end response. A larger woofer with added power will help a lot. Bass is omni-directional in sound characteristics. No reason why you could not mount them in rear door panels. Comments? Swez aposynthesi on 03/4/2005 11:03:09 Good suggestion... a couple woofers in the rear doors sounds like what I need. What should I do about the Type-S 5x7's? The Type-R has a crossover, while the Type-S doesn't... so when I increase the volume, the Type-S's are distorted and the Type-R's aren't. Or would that have to do with the size of the speaker (5x7) and the line (Type-S) being too small to reproduce as much as the 6x9 does? compvr15s on 03/4/2005 15:23:37 buy some 80-100 hz filters for the 5x7s they are just lil resistors that wire into just the positive speaker input on each speaker. then anything below the chosen freq will be blocked, i know stinger makes them, but im sure there are many other brands. radioshack may even have them as well. and just get some nice midbass as swez mentioned off an amp and ur midbass will be a problem of the past. good luck. swez on 03/5/2005 19:40:20 The 6x9's in the rear can handle more low end content w/o breaking up. Those 5x7's cannot do low well. I would suggest either using bass blockers for these (120-200 Hz.) or add a modest amp to power everything... including the subs. The amp will have HP/LP filters and if you don't need it crazy loud, I would have you look at Alpine's 5 channel. This amp has great features and setup menus. Alpine MRV-F450 50W x 4 + 200W x 1 Car Amplifier http://www.crutchfield.com/S-p7SVtkFHtSw/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=120&I=500MRVF450&search=alpine&wmsf=1 This can be had for a lot less then priced at Crutch.... just google shop it and see what pops up. E-bay too. As for woofers, a pair of 8" woofers in the rear door panels may be a nice option, if you have the space for same. Just make sure they are 4 ohm coils. The other option would be trunk mounted sub(s). Just make sure they can give you a 2 ohm net load for the sub amp section of this product. The 5x7's... which model are you using up there now? There are plate version Comps that will fit a 5x7/6x8 opening. They employ better crossovers, a decent tweeter and 5.25" MR driver. There are adapter plates available as well. They convert 5x7/6x8 speaker openings to 5.25" MR drivers. Swez aposynthesi on 03/6/2005 11:09:17 SPS-570A - 5x7's... I know for sure that I will eventually get rid of those 5x7's... but the bass blocker is also a good recommendation for a short period of time. That F450 is nice for a person on budget [like me]... I will look into it if I can find two [good SQ] 8" subs that will have a total of 200rms @ 2 ohms. I don't know how thick my door is... hopefully I will be able to mount them there. Thanks Swez. Any recommendations for the 8" subs? compvr15s on 03/6/2005 13:37:53 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=18802&item=5756106900&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW this auction is for a set of 8 inch midbass woofers, for 60 bucks, not a bad deal, these are different than subwoofers. their freq range is higher to fit the midbass area, i dont think i will be able to fit a regular 8 inch sub in the back doors and if s it will need to be freeair prolly, wont have any rear structure for ur sub. mounting depth on these midbass iw only 2 1/4. there are many other good brands to choose from, as well sizes. come in smaller 6.5 as well. good luck swez on 03/6/2005 15:03:14 Those slim line 8" drivers off e-bay look like a good option for door mounting. Thing is, will have to pull off a rear door cover, look for a mounting location and modify as needed, to make these drivers work. Also, I would probably plan on sealing the door panels with damping material to reduce rattles and panel resonances as well. As for bass blockers for your 5x7's, suggesting 150 Hz HPF here. That's a 265 uF, 30 volts, non-polorized filtering capacitor http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=027-370 Close enough to do the job here. This is a 250 uF cap, 100 volts and low cost too. Swez Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
