Yeah, I'm starting to look around at different amps now. I have a Crutchfield catalog, and it's amp selection is kinda limited, but I saw some Alpines in there that I liked the looks of. One is the Alpine MRP-F240, 40 x 4 RMS. This looks like an O.K. one for the main interior speakers. Is it enough power though? Also the MRP-F350, 200 x 1 RMS mono amp. This looks like a good one for the single sub that I'd be running in a car/truck. You can get 350 RMS into 2 ohms. 4 ohm is fine for me. Also, there is another one, the Alpine MRV-F450, 50 x 4 + 200 x 1 RMS. Looks like a 5-channel amp. Crutchfield's price on this is $500.00 The other two together would only be $400.00($200 each), a difference of $100.00. Yeah, I know Crutchfield's prices are high, so I wouldn't buy there, but the comparison is that the MRV amp looks like it's just a combination, more or less, of the two MRP amps. IF....a person was thinking of purchasing one or the other of these setups, would the MRV be worth the extra C note to have it all in one unit, or not? ********************************************* Hey, you know why they call it "Crutchfield"? No. Why? Cause after you've seen the prices, you need a crutch to lean on to keep from falling over! Da--Dmmp, Tssssss. Sorry. Bad joke for the night. Replies (9) uochronos on 02/22/2005 20:36:15 having it all in one unit makes for a cleaner install less wireing maybe more efficient and in all would make it worth 50-100$ to alot of people. i persoanly would like it combined makes it easier all the way around. Chronos danielm87 on 02/22/2005 21:50:05 AMEN.........Crutchfield is good for nothing except their wiring diagrams and flipping through their catalogs to see how expensive stuff is just for the fun of it. Nice Joke, by the way I'd go with the single unit, would be a cleaner install and less line loss. DM audeogod on 02/22/2005 22:17:01 WOW! Maybe it's the economist in me. I figured you all would say that $100 in the hand was worth more if the two amps did the same job as the one would. Yeah, I LOVE clean installs. But I don't mind two amps as opposed to one. Just make the wiring nice and neat and hide as much of it as possible and I'm happy. So, in general, you guys think Alpine amps are really good, or just OK, or could be beaten for nearly the same money as they would cost anyway? Also, as part of my original post asked, do you think 40 - 50 watts RMS is enough for interior speakers? That's only about 3dB gain over a deck isn't it? I'm not all about volume. I'm about SQ, purely and simply. The better it sounds, the more I like it. So based on that, does an amp that puts out 50 watts RMS do a good job or do I need more? I've not ever ran an amp on interiors. Just hooked one up for a friend on some Bahns and couldn't tell much of a difference. The amp or the Bahns could have been the problem though. So I really don't know what is enough and what isn't. UKinstaller on 02/22/2005 22:19:53 that joke could quite possibly be the worst joke i have ever heard in my entire life. hahah just jokin. but seriously, it was terrible. anyway, i like 5 channel amps. a guy i work with has a 5 channel Xtant amp that is very efficient, decently powerful, very attractive, and cheap. it has 300w RMS for the SUB. that's a lot for a 5 channel. you might wanna check it out if you are looking at a variety, i don't know the model number but i'll get it back to you. i really like 5 channel amps for their clean looks, because you condense 2 or 3 amps into one. also, you can run one set of RCA's instead of 3, not that that's a huge deal but it's clean. -UK audeogod on 02/22/2005 22:29:54 I don't know about the Alpine, I'll have to look, but I was looking at a Phoenix Gold 5 channel amp earlier and it has 3 different sets of RCA inputs. Front/Rear/Sub. That's a lot of RCA's for me to run. I'd rather not if I didn't have to. I didn't even know they made amps that put out more channels than they had inputs for. Seems like that would be NICE! Probably a lot of money too. But I don't know yet how much money I can afford to put out on the amps. Even if I can get any yet. I'm just looking around to see what's out there. I already got two amps, and they are different brands. Nothing clean about an install that looks pieced together is there? So I'm not going to use them unless it's just to get me by. uochronos on 02/22/2005 23:06:10 i think alpine and PG are both above average in amp manufactueres i have a PG tantrum 500.2 its a wonderfully solid amp... all Alpine amps i have worked with have been really nice to use and solid as well. either way would be a good chouice. remember though octane R is PG's entry level line. still above average product but they have better products up the line. Chronos audeogod on 02/23/2005 08:14:54 Yeah, I know. Almost everything I've been looking at in any car audio company's lineup has been entry level so far. I did it that way so I could help keep cost down some, but experience different and better brand names than I have been used to. Well, except for speakers that is. Most of them were entry level too, but it just worked out that way. I went with what looked good visually, and then eliminated them from there soundwise and also by availability and didn't consider entry level. I'm still waiting on some tax money. I may get a few things when some comes in, don't know exactly what. Speakers for sure. I'd love to have a new amp or two also. Wife want's furniture. We got plenty, but she want's a new kitchen table and chairs so we have more seats at the holidays. So I can't spend a whole lot on audio cause her set she wants will cost $500 or more. That's down from $2000 that she was going to spend, and she even looked at a set that was $4000 too. I said that was ridiculous though. Gotta get several things. I'd like some audio equipment too. Do the research now, and then the "getting" will be easier once I have money, I figure. Descent on 02/27/2005 01:17:45 http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?icatid=306&stk_code=alpmrvf450&svbname=309 :D I've bought a few things from that online etailer, they're pretty good. P0werLifter on 02/27/2005 14:46:47 I personally have the MFV-F450 and i love this amp, very clean, doesnt run hot, and just sounds great. I've got a set of components run to it and the power it provides is plenty, very clean and loud. I also have a 8" MB woofer hooked up on the sub channel. Ease of install, and clean looks allways gets me going. Also figure the extra RCA's, wiring, etc will add up if you buy the other amplifiers to use in sync with eachother.
