Ok, I'm gonna start a thread here for me to compare speakers in, kinda like Mr. Miyagi's thread for his stereo. All speakers I find from now until I'm done will get posted in here. Yesterday, I looked again for speakers that appeal to me visually, with the features that I like, and also gave a little attention to the number ratings as well, but not too much at this point. I'm compiling a list based on looks alone, and then after I get that done, then I'll eliminate them off until I found the one I want, and the elimination process will be based on actual sound as much as possible, even if I have to take a 2 hour road trip to hear some. I started my list by just going to the manufacturer's websites and looking at ALL they had to offer. I spent considerably longer at each website this time than I did before, therefore I only got in a few names last night. And I'm trying to be less picky this time around. What I need from you guys, if you don't mind, is just sound based answers worded in comments like "hey that's a good one" or "no that sucks" kinda answer as I post new brands and models each day or so. Maybe a few details like "well the tweeter sounds too harsh" or something like that would help too. Here are the ones that have made the list so far: Infinity - Kappa and Reference Planet Audio - M2 series Boston Acoustics - FX series JBL - Power series, also Grand Touring or GTO series Crunch - CDS series(don't know if that's the name, it's in all the model numbers though) Eclipse - Integrated series I won't be listing the ones I don't like. No point in it I can see unless someone just wants to know. Thanks to all who take any time to look and respond. All comments welcome, whether you are new to car audio or not. Replies (6) Buickman94 on 02/12/2005 14:39:42 I have a pair of 6.5 Infinity 6002i and i think they sound great, nice and crisp highs and decent bass..could be better. I have them running off a 45x4 HU but they would probably sound even better if i fed them a little more power. I also like the fact they have a rotating tweeter to angle to fit your needs. audeogod on 02/12/2005 18:15:44 What you said about the Infinity's is exactly what I have always heard, good mids and highs, but the bass could be better. Anybody else have a comment on any I've listed so far? audeogod on 02/14/2005 00:49:22 OK, the revised list is really similar to the first one with a couple of changes made. The candidates are now: - Rockford Fosgate - Punch series coaxials(still need to check out components) - Infinity - Kappa and Reference both, and both coaxials and components(these look really good) - Phoenix Gold - Octane series, coaxials and components - Planet Audio - M2 series, coaxials and components - Kove Audio - XCT series coaxials, and compaxial series compaxials(just bi-ampable coaxials as far as I can tell) - Eclipse - Integrated series(look great, but freq. res. is kinda too high for much bass without a sub, starts at 90 Hz on 6 1/2 size) - Orion - C series coaxials(awesome, but only in 6x9, 6 1/2, and 4x6 sizes....I need a 3 1/2 as well, doing two cars) - Boston Acoustics - FX series coaxials, these are sweet! - JBL - Power and GTO series coaxials and GTO components - Clarion - Phaze 1 series coaxials(these are cheap, but look nice and have poly cones, metallized PEI tweeters, just have foam surrounds though, these are good way to cut costs) I'm still looking at a couple more brands I haven't had luck getting on the websites of yet(server trouble I guess), like JL Audio, and Memphis. I also have to find CDT"s website to check them out. And even though I do not like the Polk Audio speaker's grill design, I'm still considering then for one of the car's I'm doing cause you won't need grills in it. My truck will though. And so will the house system. I dropped Crunch from the list after I found out they had paper cones. I can live with the foam surrounds of Fosgate and Clarion, though I'd rather not, but I draw the line at paper cones. Also, no one laugh now, but I still have Sony Xplod on the list. I just can't get around that they do sound kinda nice in my truck now, and I love the way they look. The red cones and silver tweeters with black trim, it's kinda sharp looking, but it depends on the series you get. Some are down right ugly with the grill designs they have. I wonder what these will sound like with an amp on them? I think I'll try it in the next day or so to see. I once had a whole Sony Xplod setup in a 97 Chevy Lumina, and I liked it a lot. It was clear as could be, but didn't have much bass to speak of. Oh, and I said I wouldn't list the ones I didn't like, but I gotta say, Soundstream has the most morbid looking series of amps and speakers I've ever seen. The Human Reign amp with the face coming up out of it looks like something in the movie "The Mummy". And the spiders for grills on the speakers is nasty. The only thing they had that looked good was the Edge series, and no grills were shown, so based on all the rest, plus figuring they were pricy, I cut them off the list of potentials. Also Eclipse had a line of coaxials, the "Point Source" that looks just like an eyeball looking at you. When the bass hits, it would look like an involuntary eye twitching. Don't want to be driving down the road with the speakers "looking" at me like something from an Edgar Allen Poe story. They should take these speakers, and Soundstreams spider grills, and come up with a freaky looking combo for some of these darky people's cars. It would be just right with some Marilyn Manson playing through it. Just don't put any of it in my car, Manson included. LC1 on 02/14/2005 01:03:08 Hey hows it going, If I were you I'd go with the Bostons FX series speakers. About 3 months ago I was buying my front speakers and I was going to a pair Boston FX5's because they sounded the nicest to me. Very clear and crisp for a coaxial, the only reason I did not get them was because at the last minute I found an amazing deal on a set of JL Audio VR series 5.25" speakers. When I was comparing the Bostons I listened to Alpine Type S, Infinity Kappa and Ref series, Audiobahn, Phoenix Octane series and the Boston's to me by far sounded the best to me. Of course its all about personal preference, but they just sounded really clean, even just running off HU power. So I would suggest going the the Boston Acoustics FX series. -Jay- Victor on 02/14/2005 03:34:31 yes.. Boston FX series ... Me too..> audeogod on 02/14/2005 20:23:06 Well, alright! That's two votes for Boston Acoustics FX series. They do look very nice. I can get them on eBay for not a lot of money either. 6 1/2's and 6x9's anyway. I need 4x6's and 3 1/2's also though.
