my friend is going to sell me his sub, it's a type s 12". i went to see it today and it sounded freaken nice, but the problem he told me was that the sub/bass would get progressivley louder as he turned the headunit volume up but at some point the sub/bass would just stop getting louder while the rest of the music besides the bass would still be going up. does this mean the sub is messed up?!?! i'm hoping not and this anonamily is because he's running a ****ty amp, 100watts rms @4ohm when the sub can handle 200watts rms @ 4ohm, or bad wires any input would be awesome!!! thank you!! Replies (4) compvr15s on 02/5/2005 05:22:38 a sub is only going to get so loud before it meets its limits. this maybe a problem to do with his amp, he may have the gains too high. but you have heard the sub and it sounds fine to you, at a loud listening level? if so and the price is good enough why not go for it, but if you heard somthing that didnt sound right when at about 3/4 listening level more than likely something is wrong with the sub and it will only get worse. can get 2 12 type s' off ebay for 150 new, so probably around 75 for one, if he will sell if for somthing less than that it will be a good investment, unless he purchesed it from an uthorized dealer where if something does happen to it then you can always have him return it for repairs then id say probably 100-125 would be a good price for just the sub without an enclosure. good luck. musak99 on 02/5/2005 06:13:36 no not at a loud listening level. that's the thing, he wanted to turn it up higher but the subs wouldn't bump anymore..it's like topped off. uochronos on 02/5/2005 14:35:38 sounds to me like the gain is set way way wrong here and after he turns it up the sub is either far surpasing what it should be in XMAx or more likly going into massive clipping Chronos swez on 02/6/2005 12:17:41 Sounds like this sub is not getting enough power to bring it to full potential. The Type S subs come in 2 flavors... 2/2 and 4/4 DVC versions. This is probably the one he has now: 2/2 in series = 4 ohm load. You have 2 ohmic options here. 1 or 4 ohms, depending on sub wiring. http://iweb.alpine-usa.com/pls/admn/item_info?p_item_name=SWS-1222D&p_category=70&p_subcategory=160&p_main=10&p_more=y This sub is very nice and can handle 300 Wrms no prob. Optimum Sealed Box Volume : 1.25 cu.ft. Optimum Vented Box Volume : 1.5 cu.ft. Vented Box Volume Range, Vent Diameter Length : 1.25-2.0 cu.ft,, 4" ID x 12" Long (~38 Hz tuning freq) in a 1.5 cf ported box. Just note that larger box sizes will net better low end bass, but power handling will drop as subs X-Max is reached at lower power levels. Careful gain settings and a subsonic filter are recommended when using a ported enclosure. Swez Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
