Can anyone suggest a good SQ tweeter? I'm running the ones I have now right off the HU,(Pioneer 4600) but they are cheapies and I think they sound harsh. I'm running a 50x4 4-channel to the 6x9s in rear deck and to the 4x6s(co axials) in dash. 2 -10' subs in trunk off another amp. I listen to stuff w/ a lot of horns i.e.Tower of Power, EWF,Spyro Gyra etc...and I want BETTER! Any help? Thanks, Sign me, Middle aged Funky White Boy P.S. By the way Swez I installed the Audiobahn AEQ6Q preamp/ line driver. Huge difference! It took care of my noise problem and I have a much cleaner signal now, and a separate sub control and EQ. Thanks again, Tego Replies (19) uochronos on 01/19/2005 16:48:35 CDT, MA audio, Phoenix gold, Diamond, i have used tweeters from all these4 companies and they are all well abover average... i suggest the CDT's they are very good tweeters and thats what i currently run for the price they are hard to beat. there silk tweeters are amazing in SQ applications. on a side note here though if your going for an SQ system... 4x6 6x8 and 6x9 speakers are not great for SQ at high volume the cones distort alot more then round speakers causing unwanted distortion. just a suggesttion if it where me i would goto a set of 4" splits in the front 4" mid where the 4x6 is and the tweeter mounted near by. and a 6.5" mid or coaxil in the rear would really kick up your SQ in this vehicle... just somethign to think about... instead of just getting the tweeter why not spend a bit more and get a 4" mid and tweeter combo for the front... i think CDT sells a couple. Chronos swez on 01/19/2005 21:01:20 I love that old music too. Especially with horns and other instrumentation, quality tweets are a must. Along with a quality crossover to get the most of a given tweeter. How much space do you have for mounting the tweets? The 4x6" dash speakers are going to hold you back in the long run. Door or even better, kicks will greatly improve MB and imaging. As Chronos mentioned, the CDT's are a very good option here. They were selling for $150.00/set at Zeb a while back. These: http://www.thezeb.com/p-CDT-Audio-CL-61A-6-1-2-inch-Component-System-101083.htm I suggest these as many have used them and report very good value and SQ as well. The crossovers are great and so are the drivers used. They can take more power, but a clean 50 Wrms will do them well. Especially in Kick panel installs. FYI: Since you like some of the older Jazz/R&B music, I would go for the Silk dome tweeter version. They sound much more natural and less harsh than most metal domes I have listened to. What say you? Swez montego_27 on 01/19/2005 21:37:11 As for the kick panels, lower dash takes up a lot of space on the right.I looked under Crutchfields site and they don't make panels for the 92' Lumina.(although I would love to do something there) I don't think doors are an option either. How do you think a 4' component setup would go where that 4x6 is? I've got pretty good room for just about any tweets. uochronos on 01/20/2005 02:38:28 the problem with the dash mount is the mids are pointed at the windshield not at you or better the center of the cieing between the front seats... i would think a set of components with a 4 inch mid in the dash would be vastly supperior to 4x6's you haev currently but not nearly as good as a set mounted in a better local.... as for the doors it can be done its a good chunk of work but defiantly doable... also could get a installer to do it for you... i'm not familar with this car so i cant be of alot of help as to other mounting options. Chronos montego_27 on 01/20/2005 07:38:48 I'm not against trying something w/ the doors, although they are pretty thin and have a little compartment type thing on the bottom of them. I'm pretty good at fabrication projects(especially since this new roto-zip deluxe arrived under my x-mas tree!) and I've probably installed 200 speakers or more in my 44 yrs.But it would be a lot nicer if I could find some type of form or enclosure for them(either 5" or 6") any suggestions? Thanks,Tego montego_27 on 01/20/2005 09:33:45 Well after going outside to bring my two boys to school, and taking a closer look at the kick panel area and doors,I'm now resigned to the fact that I have to go w/ a 4" in the dash.We just got another 4" of snow here in New England and I just noticed how much snow got trudged into the car (namely where the kick panel is)and also the lack of room down there.Doors are just out of the question because of design and window crank position. So should I go w/ a 4" midrange or midbass in the dash?Tweeters I can put in plastic column going from dash up to visors on angle. swez on 01/20/2005 12:30:50 Keep trying Tego... almost as old as Ol Swez... hehe (49 years young) There are component integrated 4x6" plate speakers out there that consist of a 4" MB, tweeter and crossovers. Some of the tweeters do swivel, so you can aim them for best imaging effect. It sounds like you have looked at all the other options mentioned. Seems like a no-go on this install. Just note that using a 4" MB driver, you may be limited on low end (bass) performance up front. May have to filter them above 150 Hz. Who makes 4x6" plates? Bahn, Clarion, Infinity & Polk, to name a few. Crutchfield has a few listed from Infinity & Polk. My money would be on Polks: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-4yM1N0KVDSo/cgi-bin/prodgroup.asp?g=51400&est=&search=4x6+speakers Swez montego_27 on 01/20/2005 16:06:26 So you think it's a better idea to go w/ the plate type rather than the separates? I think I'd still like to go w/ a second pair of tweets up high as well (love those cymbals). uochronos on 01/20/2005 17:32:42 the plate speakers are liek components seperate MB and Tweet with a good crossover just all mounted to a plate together... Chronos montego_27 on 01/21/2005 20:08:56 Well I picked up a pair of tweets today, Electronics show was @ R.I. Convention Center today and I found a pair of Audiobahn T68's. 25mm silk domes for $30.00 new in box.(Pretty good deal I thought). Now just trying to find a score on the 4x6 plates. Will install tommorrow along w/ a pair of Infinity 6.5's(Birthday present from wife) to replace 6x9's in rear deck, before the coming snowstorm ( 20"to 24" expected) uggggghhhh!!!!! See you after digging out,Tego uochronos on 01/21/2005 20:12:48 normal i wouldnt suggest bahn for SQ but for 30$ i say that a great upgrade.... SIlk dome instead of metal well be much mellower and natural. should imporve SQ alot and get you those high notes and tones you are looking for:) Chronos PS from one bargin hunter to the next. good deall on the tweets, swez on 01/21/2005 22:06:29 "Ambient" tweeters are not a bad idea at all. Have used them in the past to liven up front speakers that were stock and could not do too many Mods as it was a company leased vehicle. It made a noticable difference in stock performance up front. (97 Merc Villager) Also added a pair of full range boxes (home stereo type) off rear channels to fill in the lows and highs that just were not there with stock speakers. When finished with just a few basics and stuff I had on hand already, the improvement was dramatically better SQ performance. Hey kuddos to the new purchase on your Bahn tweets. Sweet deal there bud! However, be prepared to figure out how to tone these little guys down. Bahn tweets are really "hot". (high efficiency, a bit + too bright) You may need to use a Zobel network, to bring them down as much as 6dB. This is a pretty simple design of a pair of resistors of specific values, designed to bring the SPL efficiency of very efficient tweets and other components w/o changing net impedance loads. If you find the new tweets to be overpowering, let me know and I'll help you figure out what components are needed to tone them down. Swez montego_27 on 01/22/2005 00:01:43 Well, right now I'm running the current tweets right off the HU.Dash 4x6's and rear deck co-axials are running through line driver/EQ (Bahn AEQ6Q)and 4-channel amp.Should I also hook up tweets to 2 front channels of amp to control them better. Also on amp HP crossover frequency is 80Hz-1.2Hz. These are the specs on the tweets. Audiobahn Audiophile Grade Tweeters 25 mm Soft Dome Design Neodymium Magnet Motor Structure Design Audiophile Crossover Network Included Crossover Slope Of 12 dB/Octave Multiple Mounting Options: Flush/Surface/or Angled 360 Degree Swivel Mount Maximum Continuous Power Handling Of 100 Watts (rms) Frequency Response From 2 KHz to 22 KHz Sensitivity Of 90 dB Mounting Hardware Included montego_27 on 01/22/2005 00:25:51 Hey Guys what do you think of these to replace my 4x6s in the dash? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=18800&item=5744937357&rd=1 uochronos on 01/22/2005 00:31:53 diamond makes some fine gear however is that a pair of mids 4" with an xover with or without tweeters? didnt say anything about tweeters and i didnt see them in pick.. Chronos montego_27 on 01/22/2005 01:10:08 I picked up a pair of tweets today. Can I pair them? Look in previous post at the tweeters. swez on 01/22/2005 07:48:18 Great price on a pair of Diamonds here Tego. You may have a real battle on your hands, installing them in the dash location. They may be a bit too deep and since they are round, not oval... may have to fabricate a plate for the install. Check the specs at Diamond for details. www.diamondaudio.com This may be an older series MB driver. I cannot find any specs off the web site. You may have to contact Tech Service for details on that model. Swez montego_27 on 01/22/2005 10:58:22 Found out they have a mounting depth of 1 5/8" (not too bad) however price is going up on those Diamonds (now $36) I know these are probably a great addition for me, but how high should I go? As far as a plate Crutchfield sells a SAP to go from 4x6 to 4" round, or I'll just fabricate one (go roto-zip!) Also I just came across these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=18800&item=5730153123&tc=photo montego_27 on 01/22/2005 15:27:10 Well, just installed tweets.WOW! What a difference.Much more natural and much smoother. Heard every crash cymbal in Neil Pearts famous drum solo. Now on to the dash! P.S. Anyone out there get pounded w/ snow like I'm about to in Mass.? Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
