how do i get a constant from the cig lighter? are there any other ways to get a constant other than the in-dash wire? ive tried running my HU without the constant but it wont turn on. is it essential to have the constant wired to the HU in order for it to work? thanks Replies (7) UKinstaller on 01/16/2005 02:19:52 well it is and it isn't essential to work. you CAN make it work by tying it in with the red wire, but you will lose memory every time you turn it off. so it will work, but it will suck. what kind of car?? i might be able to tell you how to tap into your ignition harness or cig lighter or something. -UK mestup on 01/16/2005 02:30:49 thanks uk! its an 87' honda accord swez on 01/16/2005 03:03:33 Does the Cig lighter work with the key out of the Ign., switch for this car? If it does, it is a useful tap for Constant power lead. Just splice into it for your Constant lead needs. Usually, the cig lighter is a larger gage wire and that circuit is fused at ~20-25A. If not, the other option is to run a wire from + terminal on BAT, to Constant wire of HU. Swez ttocs on 01/16/2005 13:35:17 there will be two wires going to the cig lighter. You will want the one that goes to the middle of it, not to the outside. swez on 01/16/2005 15:14:48 Hey ttocs, (and other installer tech) The ground on the cigarette lighter... how is that for grounding a HU? I would guess it to be an excellent ground source as it has a large current capacity and a solid ground path return circuit. What's your view/comments Swez ttocs on 01/16/2005 18:07:12 I would see no problems with it, but if there is bare metal nearby it would still be better to go there. swez on 01/16/2005 19:24:58 Sounds like good advice. I think we could prove/disprove the use of that ground tap with an ohmeter. The point with the lowest ohmic readings (< 0.2 ohms) and battery ground, should work out pretty well.
