Mini Cooper Subwoofer

I have a 2004 Mini Cooper S with the stock radio installed into it. I want to add a subwoofer to the system however have read about many possible pitfalls with respect to the install.

Is it possible to add the subwoofer into the system while still using the stock head unit? I have heard of people copleting the install via swapping the head unit but I would prefer to accomplish it another way.

I had thought to use one of the lines to the rear speakers in order to install it but am unsure what that would do to the sound quality of the system.

Does anyone have any experience with installing a subwoofer into this car and can you offer me any advice on the installation?

as long as it doesn't have some sort of crazy amplified sound system, then it shouldn't be a problem. you'll need a Line Out Converter to convert the speaker wires behind the radio into an RCA signal so you can run RCA's to the amp.

as far as the sound quality with a line out converter, it's not nearly as good as the quality of an aftermarket head unit, but they definitely work. they cost about $20 for a good one.

If your sub amp has high signal inputs, can simply tap off the rear speaker signals and feed that to sub amp/sub. Is it the best SQ this way? Maybe, maybe not... but it will work. I have done this in the past.

Am sure others have thoughts on the matter as well. Let's get their inputs as well.
