Does this sound like a good match?

Sounds like a really good match to me.

If I remember correctly the 12W7 likes something like 600-900 Watts, and comes as a 3 ohm setup.

My math is not working well today, but at 3 ohms, the 1200.1 should give you somewhere around 500 watts I believe. If you ever plan to add a 2nd W7, you'd have the option to run them at 1.5 ohms, and the amp will continue to handle that fine.

Sweet. So the 12w7 is a 6 ohm DVC? Also, are JBL amps pretty good? I'm checkin the spec sheet and it looks alright (the signal to noise ratio could be higher) but I've not got any personal experience.

The JL 12W7 is an excellent SQ sub and can put out some prodigious SPL with enough power available.

JBL amps... very rock solid amp for the price. Is 1 or 2 ohm stable, rated at 1200 RMS @ 12.9 volts supply feed. Can do a bit more here if your car can consistantly put out 13.5 volts.

As for a match... getting pretty close to the fuzzy edge here as far as power handling goes for the W7. At 3 ohms, the 1200.1 will net pretty close to 800 watts RMS to this sub. If using a sealed enclosure... fine with a few extra watts. If ported, have to back down on the gains and perhaps have a subsonic filter at the input to amp as well. (25 Hz.)

Here are the details from JL's web site... note the power curve ratings:

Thanks Swez. About that subsonic filter though. Would sub 25 Hz inputs damage the amp? Or would those inputs result in damage to the sub?

Oh yeah one more thing. I can get an MTX 1501 D for pretty cheap (as I work at Circuit City).

How do you think the MTX amp would compare to the JBL in question?

The amp can handle 25 Hz... but in a ported enclosure, the sub can be damaged with low frequency audio, below tuning frequency of the port. In this case I believe JL tuning recommendation is close to 35 Hz. It's in the .pdf referenced listed above.

If you go sealed, no need for a SS filter as the box will automatically rolls off lows that can be damaging to the sub. The box (enclosure) is the key factor to quality bass performance. Not just any old box will do... especially if you are willing to pop for a JL flagship sub.

Finally, if you go ported... can show you some plug in SS filters that will do the job.... ~$30.00 a pair.

Also, the MTX 1501 is rated at 1000 watts RMS @ 2 ohms. Since you have a 3 ohm sub pending, that translates to ~750 watts RMS to the sub at full power.

If you can but the MTX for ~$300.00, go that route as there is very little difference in perceived output SPL between 750-800 watts RMS.

Do you plan to go sealed or ported on the sub enclosure?

Tray, what you are considering is an excellent pair. I just sold my W7 and my JBL 1200.1 on ebay (my girlfriend made me... too loud!), but they were a perfect match. The JBL puts out 1200watts rms at 2ohms, and 600rms at 4 ohms, so I estimate that along those lines it should put out about 900watts rms at 3 ohms, which is the impedence of the W7. Also, the W7 has a 750watt rms. I wasn't able to turn my amp up all the way because it would eventually be too much for the sub to handle... but at those levels, I couldn't be in the car because it was so freakin' loud. but believe me, I have had probably 10 different brands of subs in the last 2 years and absolutely NOTHING that I have ever heard compares to that setup. The bass you will produce is unbelievable and when you stick your head to the sub, you will hear voices coming out of it! It is the most well engineered sub on the market and you could'nt find a better combination of SPL and sound quality if you tried. That amp is plenty powerful for a w7 so you won't risk over-heating the amp...... so I would definitely reccomend that setup.

sorry, that reply was to Pinch... not tray, my mistake

Well thanks for the input all. I'm stoked to get the set and start bumpin'. I haven't worked out details for a box yet, but I'm workin on it.
