Inputs? Problem with Sub

Hey whats up guys? I just got done installing my system 2 days ago. Its a 15" XXX in a 7.8^Ft enclosure (thats after all displacements are accounted for) tuned to 35hz powered by a PA 3000dB (i know not the greatest amp but im replacing it with a Orion 2500d soon). I have it tuned supplying the XXX with 1600watts RMS. I ran the numbers and had everything graphed in BassBox6 Pro and said that 1600watts wouldnt be a problem with this size enclosure (the shop i go to said the same thing)

Ive noticed now that when it plays, i hear something that sounds like kind of a slight rattle or a scratching sound comming from what appears to be the sub. Its possible its comming from inside the box but Im doubting that. Im going to take out the XXX tomorrow and check it free air to see what i can come up with and make sure theres nothing loose in the box but wanted to get some of your guys opinions of what it could be.

Ive only had the sub in for 2 days now and i started to hear it lastnight. Any Ideas?

Thanks Guys

i have had a similar problem it was a rattling sounded like from the sub it was the wire running to the speaker wire rubbing the done of the speaker as it moved... may check to see if similar is happening to you.

checking in free air well tell you too of course.

Thats a possiblity, im hoping your right. I did leave some slack in the wire behind the sub so that could be it. Today (since its 1am already) ill be taking the sub out and checking it free air. Im also going to secure the wiring to the basket via zip ties so it shouldnt rattle if that is the case.

Hey Pl.. i have had similar problems a few times.. and everytime it has been the tinsel leads hitting the back of the cone to create the noise..

check out those too..

If the tinsel leads are the problem..how do i go about fixing it? Or do I need to sent it in for warrenty work?

In a free air test, yo will be able to see the tinsel leads in action with the cone. If they are making contact with the cone, simply shift the position of the leads with your finger and re-test. (they are flexible)

Tinsel lead slap is common in high excursion subs. Some high excursion sub makers have added small dampening pads on the backs of their cones to counter this problem.

Also, the hardware that you have mounted to the box, may also be a source of noise. Can use neoprene gaskets or silicone between hardware and box to dampen any rattles that may eminate from there.

hey.. sorry i forgot to tell you how i tackled the problem with those tinsel leads....

first I tried to shift their position as swez suggested but with the regular use of the sub and due to the movement in car they shifted to the original position and the noise re-appeared..

hence I did just what some of the manufactureres do with their high excursion subs.. I pasted a 2" x 1.5" of 3mm thick one side glued sponge right at the place the leads were contacting the cone and the problem was solved.. If you find the problem with the leads this is the way to go..

Like swez said it could also be a problem of the extra accessories you added to the enclosure.. it could also be that the rim of the sub makes the noise when it contacts the wooden base due to high vibration.. this could happen if the sub is not properly screwed.. try applying the same 3mm thick sponge on the back side of the rim of the sub and then screwing it to the board.. this will help avoid the air escape and the vibration noise..

Also check if the cone and the spider connections got any problems.. and also the surround and the cone.. both these things are known for making the kind of noise you mentioned..

If that is the case you shall have to get the sub replaced provided it is under warranty..

Update::::: I took the sub out today, tested it free air, no problems with the VC or tensil slap against the cone, turns out that the pole vent was blocked due to the polyfill in the box. Sooooo I just removed all the polyfill (since it was blowing it out the vent anyway after i secured it down b4) out of the enclosure and put the XXX back in. Whammy back to pure bass and hittin in 140dB's in the 30Hz range

Gotta love it

Thanks for the input guys

sometimes you get lucky GRIN. On another note tho, I have an 8" Adire Koda sub in a .25^ft enclosure with 150watts RMS. Ive noticed that its making a poping sound and isnt really providing much MB at all for that matter.

I took it out of the consol and checked it free air, still making the popping sound so i disconnected it and pushed in on the cone. I could feel it catch and made a very slight scratching sound from down in the motor around the gap. Any ideas here guys? theres no reason it should be blown here. Maybe a lucky defect?
