AM Radio Noise

I just installed a new car radio deck in my car. There is noise in the AM channels especially a certain station. (The engine is not running.) But when I connect a small pocket radio (Aiwa) to the auxillary input of the deck and listen to the AM stations, there is no noise. I have tried to ground the chasis of the deck and the noise is still there. Could someone please give me some advice on how to eliminate that noise?

is the pwr ant going up? Alot of nissans of that era had a negative trigger pwr ant that many people do not catch. If it does then try temporarily connecting a different ant and see if the reception improves. You do not have to mount it to check it.

Who listens to am? Just kidding....

Hi UKinstaller,
I don't know what a factory bose system is. But I think it does not have a factory bose system.

Hi ttocs,
My car antenna is not a power antenna.

Thank you for all your replies.

Hummm, I think you have found your answer... use the pocket Awia radio for AM???

Some HU's have poor noise rejection on the AM band. Especially at night, when they cut power per FCC rules, AM stations have very low signals and more subject to engine noise after sundown.

Since the Awia portable may not depend on car voltage to operate (or has a better band filtering network) you don't hear the noise. I have a factory (GM) HU and during the day, AM (talk radio) reception is fine. After dusk, reception degrades significantly, as the stations have to cut power.

I know that's not the answer you were looking for... but this is common in AM band performance on local or distant stations. The other option that might help, is to replace the antenna and wire to HU. Over time, the antenna wire connections can degrade and we lose signal capture. Perhaps a good cleaning (remove oxides..rust) on old antenna/wire connections may help.

good luck,
Swez

this is the reason we quit using AM in the 70s. NOONE under the age of 30 should be listening to AM. It's just for old farts.

:-)

Actually, it's probably something inside the amp device that's picking up noise. However, like a typewriter and a horsedrawn carriage, I wouldn't pay to fix it.
