How to fix my 88 Benz 260E radio

Being as I don't know how much longer I am going to have the my car since I am going to college soon, I am looking for a cheap solution. The tape deck in my radio doesn't work and every time I try I hear a grinding sound inside the tape deck. I think that the pins that spin the tape aren't alined, so its rubing against something else. Now my question is could I fix this if I take it to a electronics shop or would I have to go through mercedes? Thanks for any help

it would probably be cheaper to just buy a new cd player....

say you spend $50 - $75 bucks to get it fixed, which on a mercedes could easily be an understatement. you can buy a new cd player for $100. and, you can take it out whenever you get rid of the car and stick it in the new one once you get it.

80's to early 90's mercedes cd player installation is pretty easy. if you get one, i can tell you the wires you will need to hook up the new one to your factory wiring. you can even keep the speaker fader switch.

he may be right. The shop I sideline at does repairs on stock decks, more then likely there is one near you as well. Go in and tell them your problem. More then likely they will check it out and if it is too $$$ then get a new one. That will also be a little work as more then likely you have a Becker unit in there with the seperate fade control in the middle that requires some re-wiring.....

Yeah, well at first I was going to just get a cheap CD player because of that reason alone. However, after asking around I found you need to hardwire it into the car, so that raises the price of installation. The only reason I didn't do it is because I am going to college in August, so I wont be driving enough to warrent the installation price of hardwiring it. So I was pretty much looking for a cheap solution to hold me over

we can tell you how to hardwire it yourself. it's not that bad.

think about it: it's an 88, so it's not mint. the radio is pretty easy to remove. and, you've got people here that can tell you step by step what to do. it will save you about $75 for installation.
