Hi guys. I have a bunch of questions. Can some one help me better understand hp lp filters and tuning frequencies, 0db -3db is what? At this moment My mids/highs that consist of a component set in front and 6x9 2ways in the rear running off a old orion amp seem to be coming out way to high pitched. It pierces my ear drums. Sounds clear tho don't get me wrong. Since my components have crossovers should I just set the amps filter to full? Speaking of that amp... its temporary. My original amp is a Kicker. The kicker amp had over heating problems then just stopped working. I opened her up and it looks mint. nothing is fried or anything. I do have a feeling its the rca connectors or something what should I do? Send it to kicker for repairs even tho its not under warranty? [sorry this is so long im in serious need of help] so now im borrowing an old cobalt orion amp. guess what the 3rd channel only puts out static WTF? 3 12's in a sealed box... what is my subsonic filter for? I have an old school featureless jvc head unit and I think getting a new head unit right now would be the best thing for my system. are there head units out there with built in eq's, 3 sets of outs (front, rear, sub that u can control separately from the head unit), auxily input in the front, and a pause button? THIS WOULD BE MY DREAM head unit and I think it would help my sound quality out a lot. What head units do u guys recommend my el chameleon blows. ha, basically im a blind guy at a strip club please help me. Thanks. First, list your equipment--brand and model number 2. use paragraphs, because, damn that is hard to read 3. and tell us what you have going where (amps to which speaker, etc.) i think you'll soon learn that 90% of this ballgame is installation, 10% is the equipment. 99% of all CD/head units have the exact same guts, they just have slightly different features and drastically different looks. they ALL sound the same. ZeAliOuS on 12/20/2004 04:24:26 sorry ill repost. need to get some sleep though. swez on 12/20/2004 07:41:27 As Mr. B. said... very hard to read a bunch of run on sentences. Break it down in small paragraghs for each part of your system and then we can make some sense out of it and get you moving in the right direction. I will address HP/LP & SS filters for you. These are amp filters common to most full range and Mono sub amps. The HPF is used to block low freqencies to small format speakers. That prevents excess low bass energy from either high distortion issues in smaller speakers or blowing them completely. Most car applications work well at ~80 Hz HPF settings. Depends on what your speakers can handle though. A typical 6x9 can do 60-80 pretty well. A 4x6" speaker, may have to kick up the HPF to 120-150 Hz for clean audio there. The LPF blocks highs to low frequency speakers. (MB & Subs) Here again, 80 Hz is a good place to start. But it really depends on the sound you like. There is a range for bass. (30-100Hz) is commonly sent to the sub(s) This is typical for 12's and 15" woofers. If you use 10's or 8's for woofers, 40-100 Hz is often more appropriate. SS filters are used to block ultra-low frequencies to the amp. They are used to remove harmful signals and low frequency noise that may be present in the signal chain. (HU, processors & amps) They are also a smart choice when using a ported enclosure. If one is using a port tuned box (say 35 Hz is tuning freq) you'll want to set your SS filter between 30-35 Hz. This will protect your subs from damage while trying to reproduce bass signals below the PTF. (Port Tune Freq) Swez ZeAliOuS on 12/20/2004 16:55:11 My system: JVC El Kameleon HU MA Audio 23k 6c 6.5 components FRONT MA Audio Y2057K 5x7's REAR --- Orion Cobalt 4 chnl amp 3 MA Audio 12" D6 subs DVC 3 ohm Sealed box --- MA Audio 2582 1300w X1 @ 1ohm mono amp My goal is to improve my sound quality. Do I lack an EQ? Should I get a new HU with a buil in EQ? Thx to swe, I have a better understanding about the HP LP fillters... Any thing else i should know about that will make my system sound better? The Orion amp that im using is a replacement for a Kicker 404 amp that stoped working. I opend up the kicker amp and found that there was no visable damage. Any recomondations on what i should do with the amp? The orion amp isnt working properly. On the 3rd speaker output i only get static. Again no visible damage when opend. So do I need a new amp for my mids/highs? What kind? I was thinking about getting a profile 640 from the zeb: http://www.thezeb.com/p-Profile-CL640-Multi-Channel-Amplifier-103515.htm Because my kicker amp kept over heating and I think fans will keep this one from over heating... plus its cheap. I think it would help my system out if i got a new HU. Any recomondations? So any help u guys could give me would be great. ZeAliOuS on 12/20/2004 21:33:23 BUMP. I just went by a local shop that sells mostly eclipse and conncept. They were trying to tell me that all HU are not built the same and that paying 500 for a HU isnt that bad. ok... let me just sell my kidneys because wow. uochronos on 12/20/2004 23:06:26 you can spend 2000+ if you want on a HU but do you personaly need that? are you going to use all its features? or are 80% of them going to just sit there and be wasted because you dont personaly want them or need them? retail wise a good HU goes from 200-350$ now those can be had for much less online if shoped well... if your short on cash a 150$ HU can be found with good features and not a bad unit at all... Alpine, Pioneer premier, Clarion, etc all make fine HU's. i would say alpine is probaly some of the best HU's you can buy but i own a Clarion and a Pioneer Premier currently and i'm extremly happy with both... i paid around 230$ for each of them. the pioneer i bought on sale at a local shop saved like 40$ the clarion is a refurb i bought online it originaly at stores would have sold for a bit under 500 something like 490$. i would say the 2 HU's are very comparable just the clarion has alot more bells and whistles little things that are just fun. so really between a 270$ hu and a 490$ hu i cant tell a huge differnce... hmm hopefully i have actualy awnsered your question hehe i seem to have been rambleing towards the end hehe.
