Whats a cross over and what does it do Replies (1) swez on 12/15/2004 20:15:50 A crossover is an active (powered) or passive (non-powered) device that is used to filter out unwanted frequencies in a given band of signals. Example: Say you have 2 speakers in an audio setup. One is a larger speaker (say 8" woofer) and another is a 1" tweeter. The tweeter cannot take low frequency notes well without damage to the delicate diapham (cone) and its' voice coil. The woofer does a poor job with high frequency signals. We need a crossover that allows the woofer to get the lows it was designed for and the tweeter to get the highs, it was designed for. Some crossovers are a simple coil and/or capacitor arrangement. This is a simple passive crossover. Complex crossovers, often use a combination of coils, caps and resistors and employs a small preamp to return the signal to original input voltage. (line level reference) This is an active crossover. Swez Copyright ClubKnowledge 2009 * All Rights Reserved |
