Prev :: Next Hi, I have a 1979 Chevy Pickup and I would like Advice/Comments on replacing existing "Knob type" radio with newer "DIN" style radio...cutting the opening, mounting the metal suppost frame for the DIN radio... ..Thank You..:-) Replies (3) ttocs on 12/10/2004 09:11:47 oh its been a while, but I will never forget. Stuck in those old trucks, dash vibrating like it is going to explode from the saw-zaw, rust, metal and dust flying everywhere(me sneezing like a tornado the whole time)!!!! Kinda makes me miss it.. It is not too bad. Remove the front dash, the ventwork, and pull the radio out from the back. Put the front dash back on. Line up the decks din cage to the opening and mark it off. You can use a pen/pencil or score it with a pick/screwdriver. I have used dremmels as well to cut it, definitly with a small grinding wheel to clean it up. There is a piece that I would use from a GM kit (99-4544 metra) that I would trim to cover the gaps from the knobs. If you get the flat mounting face from that kit, and trim the left corner to match the dash, it dresses it up alot. These are common left over parts that most install bays have laying around, hit up your local shop and they can probably hook you up if you sweet talk them. Hit the cig lighter for the +12v constant, orange wire. done....... UKinstaller on 12/11/2004 01:25:56 you're gonna need switched power and ground as well. manually ground the radio to the chassis, and the switched (ignition) wire will be your choice of a heavy gauge brown wire back behind the brake pedal, or a yellow wire behind the radio. also, you are going to need to send fresh speaker wire to each speaker for the new radio. -UK ttocs on 12/13/2004 21:11:06 it should have the switched, we will need a constant... 78's had the old nob style radios, didn't need +12v constant. Switched is yellow I think? Grab the +12v constant(memory) at the fuse box. There should be an extra terminal marked "bat". Use a proper spade female, please do not just wrap the wire..
