Low level input voltage. Big difference?

I currently have a Pioneer HU w/ a LL output to the amps of 2.2V. I noticed that I had to turn the gains way down on the amps, otherwise I get the engine noise whine.SQ is fine, but If I upgraded to a HU w/ say a 4or 5v output would it let me turn the gain up a bit without getting the noise and producing a little more volume?

Thanx,Montego

you should not have engine noise if the cables are routed correctly. Have you seperated the signal and power wires? A deck with higher output V will help but you should be able to turn the amps up to a descent level without any noise....

Engine whine and noise issues are often a sign of inadequate grounding of the system in general. The amp(s) have to be well grounded to a bare metal location near the amp(s).

Also, the HU ground may have to be changed. If it is now grounded to the Harness, try grounding to floor pan or fire wall. This usually solves ~90% of most noise problems. As ttoks mentioned, keep you low voltage signal lines away from the power line in as well.

Finally, if you still cannot get enough signal reference voltage off this HU, a line driver may help a lot. The LD pushes up the HU Reference voltage so you can dial back on the HU gains for less noise and more signal. This is called signal to noise ratios.

PS Look this one up and read the section on engine noise. It explains the process well... but you may have to read it a few times to get the whole picture.

Where can I check out a line driver and who has them?

Here are some low cost LD's for your application. You may need more than one, depending on the amp system used.

1. http://www.mobilevideo4less.com/noisefilters.html

2. http://www.ultimate-sounds.com/maaudio/13.htm

3. http://www.davidnavone.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=N-332V

There are many more out there to choose from. Maybe others can chip in on additional units to consider.

Although there pricey. I like the Audio Control LD. The Overdrive is their basic unit.

And the Matrix is the big daddy LD.

I have the EQS in my truck and I love the combination of the EQ and LD in one unit.

Yep, that's the Mercedes of signal processors in my mind. Great company support, fine products... but not cheap. A little e-bay shopping may net you a few good deals.

The AC Three.1 & Four.1li is a nice EQ/LD sets as well. Several outputs for multiple amps and they are often sold pretty reasonable off e-bay too. The 3.1 has 6 outputs, the Four.1li has 4 outs and Aux input for other imput devices as well.

Your just putting a band-aid on the wound... Dirty signal in means a dirty signal out. Take the time to fix the problem, and you will gain alot of sound just by being able to turn the amps up.

swez on 12/15/2004 06:19:00
Agreed... but how does one figure out where the problem lies? Dirty signals in, dirty signals out, but louder... sure! That's a reasonable statement. (GIGO)

Take time to fix it... is like telling a half-blind man to look at the moon. It does not help without some direction as to where to begin looking (troubleshooting) to resolve the issue.

Where to look?

1. Low HU output (possible issue, but not primary)
2. Poor grounding in system (1st place to start)
3. Improper wiring routing (2nd thing to check)
4. Amp gain setting issues (seems like he has tried that to a degree)
5. Poor quality RCA line sets (not sure is this one applies?)

Anyone see an oversight on this troubleshooting tree?

Ttocs, may I "ask" you to move from giving short responses, to a more detailed (assume we know very little) answers to our readers? We all know that you know your biz... But, we don't (cannot apply) what you know, until it's spelled out in laymen's terms. (things we can understand)

Am not picking on you bud... just trying to draw you out so that we may benefit from your vast experiences in car audio installs. Let is flow Joe... Thanks mang! Let your talent light shine ol boy...

yea i know, just been running in and out lately, not much time.

Cool, it's that time of year and everybody is running around like chickens w/o heads. Not sure if that's true in your area. But here, it just plain nuts near the malls and stores.

Okay, I've grounded my HU right to the body (sanded down),same thing w/4 channel amp(Profile Baja 740 HA 4x 60 RMS), did the same on the subs amp. Power wires are on the opposite side of RCA's.(Good quality Tsunamis')( $115) Yes I have tried amp gain settings.(Whine does decrease a little as does volume) That's why I'm inquiring about a line driver.
Thanx, Montego

OK, sounds like you have those parts correct. Where are the amp gains set at, before ALT noise comes into play?

Also, how many RCA's are used for all amps?
